The combined reach of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) speed capable ISP networks, via both Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and DOCSIS 3.1 technologies, has now helped to increase national “gigabit broadband” coverage to 34.1% of UK premises (up sharply from just 10% one year ago).

ISP Glide has criticised the UK Government’s current focus of handing out gigabit broadband vouchers to help upgrade poorly served rural homes and businesses. Instead the provider believes that the public investment could be redirected to help SMEs in business parks and urban edge environments.

The BT Group has today published their Q2 2020/21 results, which saw Openreach expand their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3.5 million UK premises (up from 2.98m last quarter). The full fibre build rate has now hit 40,000 premises per week (up from c.34,000).

The Scottish Government has today linked their new Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS) to the UK’s Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme in order to significantly boost the value of their vouchers, which expands the pot up to £8,500 for SMEs and up to £6,500 for homes.

A new report from the National Audit Office, which examines the original £1.9bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB), has warned that the Government may struggle to achieve its ambition of bringing gigabit-capable broadband to all by the end of 2025 and thus risks “leaving the hardest to reach areas even further behind.”

The new £4m Digital Borderlands Voucher Scheme has recently gone live for rural homes across Cumbria and Northumberland in England, which means that areas with slower (sub-30Mbps) broadband speeds can now apply for bigger vouchers to help them get a gigabit-capable broadband ISP connection installed.

A new report from Point Topic and the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) has revealed that over £1.76bn worth of private funding, related to the alternative gigabit broadband sector, was announced during 2019 until September 2020 and that brings the total so far to £7.66bn.

The North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) will next Tuesday vote on a key decision to award the contract for Phase 4 of their Superfast Broadband North Yorkshire (SFNY) project, which is worth £12.5m and predicted to push local “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage up to 97% (currently 92%).

A new report from the Social Market Foundation (SMF), which is a British cross-party think-tank, has warned that the Government is “unlikely to meet its target” of deploying gigabit-capable “full fibre to the premises” broadband to all by the end of 2025 without “significant policy reform.”

Broadband ISP Quickline (part of the Bigblu group) has today won its third state aid supported UK broadband delivery contract in the space of a month. The latest deal is worth £1.8m and will see the operator expand their fixed wireless and “full fibre” network to cover 1,500 extra premises in rural parts of North Lincolnshire.

A new deal between the state aid supported Fastershire project, rural broadband ISP Gigaclear and rival network builder FullFibre looks set to result in 5,000 premises across the Herefordshire town of Ledbury gaining access to a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.
