Hampshire UK Launch £1m Top-up for Rural Broadband Vouchers

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) has this week confirmed that they’re investing £1 million to “top up” any residential vouchers provided via the UK Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which helps homes in the most remote locations to access ultrafast broadband.

Big UK Rule Changes to Boost Gigabit Broadband and 5G Rollout

The UK Government has today confirmed a series of changes to both the Electronic Communications Code (ECC) and Mobile infrastructure planning, which when taken together are intended to help boost the on-going deployment of both “gigabit-capable” broadband and 5G mobile networks (as well as the Shared Rural Network).

Lords Told UK Farmers Have to Visit McDonald’s for Broadband

Yesterday’s debate on the forthcoming Agriculture Bill 2019-21 saw the House of Lords being told, by non-affiliated life peer Lord Holmes of Richmond, that some of the farmers he knows have such poor access to internet connectivity that they “have to go to McDonald’s to get broadband coverage.“

Wales Extends BT FTTP Broadband Rollout to 39,000 Premises UPDATE

The Welsh Government (WG) has just announced that their Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is currently building a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 26,000 premises by March 2021 (here and here), is to be extended to reach 39,000 premises.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve just passed a new milestone, which was achieved by extending their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network coverage to a total of 3 million UK premises. Only another 17 million more to go..

BT Scoops £13m Northumberland UK Full Fibre Rollout Contract

The North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA), which represents Newcastle, North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) and Northumberland, has announced that BT have secured the contract to deploy a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network to help connect 271 public sector sites (council offices, libraries, NHS etc.).

Leicestershire UK Get Extra Broadband Cash as Contract Retendered

The Superfast Leicestershire project in England has secured a small pot of £100,000 in extra funding to help the scheme spread “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) further, although the details remain unclear. Meanwhile the East Leicestershire contract for Phase 3 has been re-tendered “as no credible bids were received.”

8200 Extra Devon and Somerset Premises to Get Fibre Broadband

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has signed two extension contracts with UK ISP Airband and telecoms giant BT (Openreach), which will see a further 8,200 premises gaining access to faster “fibre broadband” (mostly full fibre FTTP) connections by the end of 2021.

INCA Calls for More Action on Skills to Boost Full Fibre Rollout

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents various alternative broadband ISPs and network builders, has called on the UK Government to put “urgent investment” toward training and apprenticeships in the telecoms sector to help skill-up new engineers.

Remember that £5bn pledge by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to have “gigabit broadband sprouting in every home” by the end of 2025 (here)? Perhaps unsurprisingly, it now looks like the Government are watering down their language on that to “go as far as we possibly can by 2025.”

Over the past few months’ we’ve seen the UK Government step-up market engagement exercises as part of work to develop a framework for their £5bn investment, which aims to ensure that “every home” can access “gigabit-capable” broadband by the end of 2025. As a result we now have a better idea of what this will look like.

2020 H1 – UK Gigabit Broadband Covers 22% as FTTP Hits 14.8%

The latest independent model has estimated that the H1 2020 coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks across the UK has risen to 14.8% of premises (up from 11% in H2 2019), while 61.7% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 59.3%) and 22.1% are within reach of “gigabit” (1Gbps) speeds.

Fibrus Likely to Win Full Fibre Contract for 10 N.Ireland Councils

Belfast-based UK broadband ISP Fibrus appears as if it could be set to secure a key £15m Full Fibre Northern Ireland Consortium (FFNI) contract, which will construct a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre or FTTP network to connect around 880 public sector sites across 10 council areas by March 2021.

B4RN Aim FTTH Broadband at 40,000 Rural UK Premises by 2022

UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to rural premises in several counties across England, has furnished us with a progress update and revealed that they aim to reach 40,000 properties passed by 31st March 2022 and possibly c.70,000 by 2025/26.

Lords Make Changes to Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill

The UK House of Lords has made a couple of key amendments to the Telecommunications Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Bill (here), which aims to make it significantly easier, quicker and cheaper for “gigabit-capable” broadband ISPs to access big apartment blocks (MDU) when “rogue landlords” fail to respond.

Fears of More Broadband Delays in Scotland from Gigaclear’s Lawsuit

At the end of last year the Scottish Government revealed that LOT 1 of their £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which had given BT “preferred bidder” status and was aiming to extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage, had become the subject of a legal challenge by Gigaclear. Sadly the case is now threatening more delays.

West Sussex UK Boosts Rural Gigabit Broadband Vouchers to £4k

The West Sussex County Council has joined other parts of the UK in helping to top-up the Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme with some of their own funding, which more than doubles the maximum value of vouchers to help local homes get a “gigabit-capable broadband” service installed.
