The Government’s (DCMS) Building Digital UK team recently proposed an interesting build scenario for the future £5bn – state aid funded – project to roll-out gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, which as predicted suggests that the build phase probably won’t begin until late 2021.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has announced that a reinvestment of £3m from BT will soon enable Openreach to build more “ultrafast broadband” capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP networks across the rural region of Scotland, although it’s unclear how many extra premises will benefit.

The Welsh Government has quietly published an evaluation report into their Superfast Cymru project with BT (Openreach), which put around £225m of public funding toward an extended roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) in order to help cover poorly served parts of the country. Overall it’s a positive outcome.

Rural full fibre provider Gigaclear has, as part of the state aid supported Fastershire project in Gloucestershire, become the first ISP to drill their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network so that its optical fibre cable can run under the River Severn to reach 861 homes in two villages (Longney and Framilode).

A new report from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has demanded action from the UK Government after they surveyed 1,136 small businesses. The results found that 30% of such firms still receive ISP download speeds of less than 10Mbps (rising to 39% in rural areas) and nearly half struggle with “unreliable mobile signals.“

Full fibre UK ISP Gigaclear has announced that 557 premises in Great Saling and Panfield, both within the Braintree District of Essex, can now access their Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network as a result of both the state aid supported Superfast Essex contract (Phase 3) and their separate commercial roll-out.

The Queen has today carried out the annual State Opening of Parliament, which as per usual included a list of policy plans that the Government intends to put forward over the coming years. As expected this included some planned legislation for broadband and internet safety related matters.

Sources have informed us that the Portsmouth City Council will award Cityfibre the £3.8m (public funding) Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) contract to rollout a new “gigabit-capable” Ethernet and broadband network across the south coast city (inc. nearby areas), which aims to connect public sector sites.

The Scottish Government today announced that BT is their ONLY bidder for two of the three areas under the new £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which originally (here) aspired to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premise in Scotland” by the end of 2021 (March 2022 financial).

The UK Government has today proposed a solution as part of the outcome from their recent consultation, which sought a new way of making it easier for “gigabit-capable” broadband ISPs and mobile network operators to access buildings – usually big apartment blocks (Multi-Dwelling Units) – where “rogue landlords” fail to respond.

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project has announced that their Openreach (BT) supported roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) services has now reached over 940,000 extra premises, which equates to nearly 95% with access to a “superfast broadband” speed of 24Mbps+.

The Government’s £1.7bn Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2012/13 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to nearly 5.2 million extra UK premises, has published its latest quarterly customer take-up data to the end of June 2019. Some rollouts are now seeing almost 70% adoption!

The recent cancellation of UK ISP Gigaclear’s “full fibre” (FTTP) rollout contract under the Connecting Devon and Somerset project (here) has left many rural areas with concerns. As a result the Devon County Council has now moved to assure them that the roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) is continuing.

The trouble prone Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project, which recently took the decision to end their Phase 2 contract with “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear due to significant roll-out delays (here), has confirmed that they don’t expect to sign a new supplier contract until around November 2020.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, is this week expected to commit £5bn of public funding in order to support his seemingly now watered down ambition to have “Gigabit broadband sprouting in every home” by the end of 2025 (full fibre, cable broadband, 5G etc.).

More than 40 businesses along The Shambles street in the city of York (England) – one of the oldest shopping street’s in Europe and the only “street” recorded in York’s Domesday entry of 1086 – have got access to a 1000Mbps “full fibre” network thanks to the Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

The Superfast South Yorkshire project has today announced the official completion of their £27m Phase 1 rollout contract with Openreach (BT) and the BDUK programme, which helped to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks available to 95,000 extra premises (over 97% coverage of the county).
