The European Commission’s (EC) Digital Agenda project has today published three separate studies that examine the real-world Internet speeds, coverage and prices of broadband services across most of the EU states, which also reveals how well the United Kingdom is doing.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, which specialises in deploying 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services to rural communities across the United Kingdom, has officially expanded their network to cover 10,000 premises and they intend to hit 20,000 by the end of 2015.

At the end of last year the Connecting Cheshire project in England signed a new £6m Superfast Extension Programme contract to bring BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to a further 10,000 premises by summer 2017 (here). Work on this has now started, with a rough roll-out plan also being published.

Going nowhere fast. The Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project, which had been hoping to deploy a 100Mbps FTTP broadband network to 580 premises in the rural Cumbria (England) villages of Garsdale and Dentdale, has today ground to a halt over funding problems.

The Connected Counties project has announced that it will bring forward the start of their Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract in Hertfordshire by six months, which means that BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network should reach 98% coverage by June 2018 instead of 2019.

The Government’s Connection Voucher scheme has been suspended to new applications as funding dries up. The vouchers gifted grants worth up to £3,000 to help smaller businesses in 50 UK cities get a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service installed.

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband project in England has revealed a roll-out plan (locations and time-scales) for their new extension contract with BT, which will push superfast broadband (24Mbps+) out to another 34,500 premises (“at least” 95% of the local population) by “mid 2019 or earlier“.
