Deloitte – Patchy Broadband Putting Northern Powerhouse At Risk

A new study from financial firm Deloitte has warned that slow / patchy broadband connectivity could be leaving small and medium sized businesses in the North West of England at a disadvantage, particularly those in the more urban areas of Liverpool and Manchester.

Recently the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK office gave an update on the progress of their 7 Market Test Pilots, which are testing alternative solutions (fibre optic, satellite, wireless etc.) for bringing broadband to remote rural areas. The good news is that early customers appear to be happy.

Q2 2015 UK Average Broadband Speeds Top 11.8Mbps vs 5.1Mbps Globally

Akamai has today published their latest Q2 2015 State of the Internet (SotI) report to reveal that the world’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 5.1Mbps (up from 5Mbps in Q1), which compares with 11.8Mbps in the United Kingdom (up from 11.6Mbps). The UK’s overall country ranking has also improved from 21nd to 19th.

As predicted yesterday BT has today announced a new roll-out plan for delivering faster broadband (at least 5-10Mbps) connections to the hardest to reach final 5% of premises in the United Kingdom (mostly rural homes) and an aim to push “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps G.fast to 10 million premises.

A new BT commissioned report from telecoms analyst firm Analysys Mason has perhaps unsurprisingly found that the take-up and availability of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) connectivity in the United Kingdom is ahead of Spain, Germany, Italy and France, and will remain there until at least 2020.

BT Says Cheltenham School Must Raise GBP21K for Better Broadband

The Dunalley Primary School, which alongside some other 35-40 homes in Pittville suffers from only having access to old style ADSL2+ connectivity, has been told by BT that it would need to have a “whip-round” in order to raise the £21,000 needed for an upgrade because it was not “commercially viable“.

Ovum Says UK Consumers Need 10Mbps Minimum Broadband Speed

London-based analyst firm Ovum has published a new report (Global Broadband Experience Scorecard 2015), which among other things concludes that for typical usage broadband ISPs must be able to deliver a minimum of 10Mbps (Megabits per second); rising to 50Mbps for users of Ultra HD (4K) video.

Suffolk’s Wilford Wireless Broadband Pilot Set for Network Expansion

The Suffolk Coastal District Council in England has said that a successful pilot of a rural fixed wireless broadband network, which covers a number of areas (Shingle Street, Aldeburgh etc.) and was first launched in 2012 (here), could soon be expanded to cover more locations.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project has revealed that a further £21m is to be spent on expanding superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to 95% of local premises across the county. As a result discussions are now taking place with BT in order to “draw up contracts for the start of phase three“.
