An unusual case of overbuild has cropped up in Essex (England) after Openreach deployed a new superfast Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) network into an area that had already gained “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds with the help of public investment and ultrafast FTTP. Both roll-outs are supported by the Superfast Essex project.

At present new installations of Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based UK ultrafast broadband ISP technology all come with a Battery Backup Unit (BBU) by default next to the Optical Network Unit (ONT), which helps users to maintain access to emergency services if they use VoIP. But this is about to stop.

Avanti, which operates the HYLAS Satellite broadband network, has claimed that a lack of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) in the County of Cornwall (England) is “costing jobs and holding back new start-ups,” with an estimated 6,500 Cornish businesses allegedly still being stuck in the economic slow lane (Council figures).

Internet providers that have adopted Openreach’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) product at wholesale will be pleased to learn that the operator has extended their current monthly rental discount until 31st March 2019, although not all ISPs have passed the savings on to end-users.

Consumers have a lot of options when buying a new VDSL2 router for their ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable (66-63Mbps average) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based broadband ISP connection but strictly speaking you should be using an Openreach (BT) approved model. Thankfully uno has published the most recent list of approved devices.

During a routine check we noticed that UK ISP iDNET appears to have joined the club of providers that are now selling packages based off Openreach’s new hybrid fibre G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) technology, which can offer maximum download speeds of up to 160Mbps or 330Mbps. They’ve also revised their FTTP plans.

Telecoms giant Openreach (BT) has today announced that the city of Coventry in the West Midlands of England will be the next to benefit from their “Fibre First” programme, which aims to deploy 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology to cover 3 million premises by the end of 2020.

BT has today announced that 31,000 of their employees have officially been transferred (TUPE process) to become part of an “independent workforce” under Openreach, which is a key part of Ofcom’s requirement that the network operator become a “legally separate” company (a wholly owned subsidiary of BT plc).

Customers trying to order one of Openreach’s (BT) business focused FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD / FoD) ultrafast broadband products from a supporting UK ISP are currently unable to do so because the service recently experienced a spike in demand, which has strained their operational capacity for new provisions.

Business ISP Elite has become one of the first to offer a product based off Openreach’s new OSA Filter Connect service, which is kind of a virtual (grey) dark fibre style solution that can offer scalable bandwidth from 10Gbps to 100Gbps synchronous (without having to regrade the fibre due to limitations at the exchange).
