IoD Study Criticises BT and Says Faster Broadband Delivers More Jobs

The Institute of Directors, an organisation for EU business leaders, polled 1,147 of its members to reveal that faster broadband could improve productivity at 83% of companies, encourage 31% to invest more in their business and cause 15% of firms to hire more staff. But it also criticised BTOpenreach in the UK for low service satisfaction levels.

Isle of Wight Cable Operator Slams Councils Biased BT Broadband Plan

The Isle of Wight’s (England, UK) only provider of commercial and residential cable based TV, phone and broadband products, WightFibre (formerly WightCable), has accused the councils delayed roll-out plan for superfast broadband ISP services of being “biased in favour of BT” and of having shunned alternatives.

UK Police Jail Two People for Stealing BT Copper Broadband Cable

The Metropolitan Police have jailed two adult men for stealing a “large quantity” of BT’s copper telephone cable while they posed as local workmen, which resulted in a total loss of fixed line broadband ISP and phone services to hundreds of premises in Teddington and Sussex (England) during May 2012.

National UK telecoms operator BT has today announced a final list of 99 telephone exchanges that will soon be able to receive its latest 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) or “ultra-fast” 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based superfast broadband ISP products through their commercial roll-out.

Superfast Cornwall Expands BT Fibre Broadband to Half of all Premises

The £132m Superfast Cornwall scheme, which aims to roll-out fibre optic based broadband (FTTC etc.) ISP services to “at least” 80% of homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014, has achieved a “major milestone” after it became available to around 125,000 Cornish premises (i.e. 50% coverage).

UPDATE Northamptonshire UK Pick BT for Superfast Broadband Rollout

The Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) confirms that BT has been picked as the “preferred supplier” to help every household in the county gain access to a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP connection by March 2017 (note: 90% coverage for speeds of 25Mbps+ is set for 2015).

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Pick BT for GBP60m Broadband Boost

BT has unsurprisingly been chosen by the joint Cambridgeshire and Peterborough project in England (UK) to help make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to 90% of local premises by 2015 (note: “very nearly” 100% will also get speeds of at least 2Mbps by the same date).

ISP BT UK Adds Totally Unlimited Broadband to its Unlimited Packages

Internet provider BT Retail has today introduced “Totally Unlimited Broadband” on all but its entry level offerings, some of which were already supposed to be “unlimited” in the first place. The key difference appears to be a policy change and related products are now “free from traffic management” (e.g. P2P and video streaming restrictions).

UK ISP BT Tops 6.56 Million Broadband Subscribers as Fibre Access Grows

National UK telecoms operator BT has today released its latest Q4-2012 financial results, which revealed that their retail broadband ISP subscriber base grew by +122k (up from +88k in Q3-2012) to total 6,569,000 customers (more than 1m of which are fibre optic based BTInfinity superfast broadband subscribers).

BT Openreach Starts UK ISP Trial of 220Mbps FTTP Fibre Broadband

BTOpenreach has today started a four-week long technical trial for its new 220Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP product, which will be available from telephone exchanges in Bradwell Abbey, Chester South, Exeter and York (England).

BT Sign GBP35.6m Broadband Deal for South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire

The South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and Wiltshire Council (WC) have today become the latest to sign a new £35.6m contract with BT that will make superfast broadband ISP speeds (25Mbps+) available to 94% of local homes and businesses by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

The joint Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) scheme in England has finally signed a £94m contract with BT that will make “high-speed fibre broadband” ISP services available to “around” 90% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2016.

BT Preps Technical Trial of UK Mobile Infill Solution for Rural Areas

BTOpenreach has announced plans to conduct a proof of concept trial for its new small cell based Mobile Infill Solution. The service aims to leverage BT’s existing fixed line UK telecoms network to provide mobile services into parts of the country that suffer from “non-existent or patchy” coverage (i.e. “rural areas“).

The battle to tackle copper cable and metal theft appears to finally be turning. BT informs ISPreview.co.uk that there was a 50% fall in incidents and a 24% reduction in faults pertaining to malicious damage of their UK phone and broadband ISP network last year.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national UK phone and internet access network, has told ISPreview.co.uk that they’re “making every effort” to return services to normal after the recent bout of “heavy snowfall” caused damage to their telecoms platform and travel disruption across the country.

BT Superfast Broadband Contract for Devon and Somerset UK Delayed

CAT Refuse BT Permission to Extend Appeal Deadline vs GBP95m Ofcom Fine

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has refused BT permission to extend the deadline for appealing against Ofcom’s final determination on its wholesale Ethernet charges. The regulator last year fined the telco £94,823,000 after it was found to have overcharged several broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom.
