UPD YouView UK Subscription Free Broadband TV Service Heads to Retail

The YouView (Project Canvas) IPTV product, a subscription free, broadband internet based, video-on-demand and catch-up TV service that will be bundled by several big ISPs, has today confirmed that it will be available through major retailers by the end of July 2012. TalkTalk has also pledged to reveal its related bundle at a Strategy Day for investors on 26 July.

BTOpenreach has today announced a list of 8 telephone exchanges that will be used to conduct the first pilot of their unique FTTP-On-Demand service, which allows BT to deploy “ultra-fast” 330Mbps capable fibre optic broadband speeds to almost anywhere that their existing FTTC service has covered (66% of the UK by the end of 2014).

UPD Ofcom UK Names TalkTalk the Most Complained about Broadband ISP

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest quarterly customer complaints data (Q1-2012) for big fixed line broadband and mobile providers (i.e. those with a market share of 4%+). Sadly TalkTalk remains the ISP with most complaints but crucially they have continued to improve.

CityFibre Accuse BT of Soft Peddling on the Rollout of True Fibre Broadband

CityFibre Holdings, which builds UK fibre optic broadband infrastructure (FTTP) for business, public sector and domestic needs, has criticised BT for choosing to “soft-pedal” on the roll-out of true Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband services because of an “overwhelming bias” towards slower FTTC technology.

BT Retail has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the super slow broadband bug, which resulted in some of their up to 38-78Mbps capable BTInfinity superfast broadband (FTTC) customers experiencing sub-1Mbps speeds, is caused by a fault on the ISPs HomeHub3 (HH3) router and a fix will be released “as soon as possible“.

Some of BT’s superfast broadband (BTInfinity) customers are reporting that an intermittent bug with either their HomeHub 3 (HH3) router or VDSL modem device is causing service speeds to crash, in many cases falling from upwards of 70Mbps (Megabits per second) to sub-1Mbps levels.

BT has today confirmed that it’s still on-track to offer 500,000 wireless internet access hotspots across London in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be mostly delivered via their FON wifi community of retail broadband ISP subscribers. The telecoms operator claims that 475,000 hotspots are already live in Greater London.

Fluidata Defends BT over Claims of Monopolising UK Superfast Broadband

The Managing Director (MD) of UK business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has accused the Chief Operating Officer of Virgin Media, Andrew Barron, of being almost hypocritical for claiming that BT are monopolising superfast broadband. “It’s rich that a company like Virgin, who offers no wholesale access to its residential network, is making such an issue,” said Piers.
