BT Challenge Ofcom UK Decision to Cut its Wholesale Broadband Prices

The Competition Commission (CC) is to investigate Ofcom’s March 2012 decision to cut the annual price of BT’s Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and Unbundled (LLU) broadband and telephone lines for rival ISPs, such as TalkTalk and Sky Broadband.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today revealed that some 10% (2 million+) of the United Kingdom’s fixed line ISP subscribers were connected via a superfast broadband (25Mbps+) service at the start of July 2012, which leaves 16.3 million on standard broadband products with sub-25Mbps speeds (total 21.3 million). But problems remain.

Court Rejects BT Appeal over Ofcoms UK Network Access Costs Ruling

The Court of Appeal has largely rejected BT’s latest attempt to appeal two judgments of the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) from June 2010 and March 2011, which challenged an Ofcom ruling that found the operator had charged rival ISPs too much for access to its network (i.e. Partial Private Circuits – trunk segments market).

The House of Lords Select Committee Inquiry into the UK government’s superfast broadband plan has published its first report, which criticises the lack of “strategy” and failure to focus upon “eliminating” the rural digital divide. Crucially it calls for the roll-out of a “robust and resilient national network” that should be linked primarily by open access fibre optic lines; but only if home owners pay for it first.

BT Top 6.36 Million Broadband Subscribers as FTTC Passes 11M UK Homes

BT has released its latest results to 30th June (Q2-2012), which saw their retail broadband ISP subscriber base add +85,000 new customers (down from +136k in Q1) to reach a total of 6,365,000. The operators superfast up to 80Mbps capable FTTC (BTInfinity) service also expanded to pass 11 million UK homes (up from 10m in Q1).

BT Infinity UK Deploy Firmware Fix for Super Slow FTTC Broadband Bug

BT Retail informs ISPreview.co.uk that the super slow bug, which caused some BTInfinity superfast broadband (up to 38/78Mbps) subscribers with the ISPs HomeHub3 (HH3) router to experience sub-1Mbps speeds when using a wired/LAN connection (wifi was unaffected), is now being fixed with a new firmware update.

BT Retail UK Offers FREE Vision TV Service with Broadband and Phone Bundle

BT has today launched a new offer that effectively includes its BTVision TV (IPTV) service for free alongside their broadband and calls bundle. The package, which would usually cost £17 a month, is for a limited time being reduced to just £13 (i.e. the £4 Vision Essentials element becomes free).

BT has shocked customers by announcing the closure of its old personal Web Hosting service “within the next few months … because of [the] increased costs in running it“. The service was typically supplied alongside new dialup and broadband accounts.

No Surprise as Wales UK Award GBP425m Superfast Broadband Contract to BT

The Welsh Government (WG) has today surprised nobody by awarding its £425m contract for the Next Generation Broadband Wales tender to BT. But of course it would as the telecoms giant has been the only bidder since January 2012 (here) when rival Fujitsu UK “voluntarily” withdrew due to the “risk levels“.

The often outspoken boss of business ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has criticised BTOpenreach’s engineers today for trying to sell one of its customers a BT-Infinity (FTTC) HomeHub3 router while being paid to fix a separate problem and sometimes refusing to fix faults unless one is present.

North Yorkshire UK Awards GBP70m Superfast Broadband Contract to BT

Tendring Council and BT Expand Superfast Broadband Cabinet Coverage

The Tendring District Council (TDC) in Essex (UK) has reached an agreement with BT that will see the operator expand its existing coverage of superfast broadband (FTTC) services to include the rural villages of Kirby-le-Soken, Kirby Cross and Great Holland via three new and previously unplanned street cabinets.
