Several newspaper reports over the weekend have claimed that UK ISP POP Telecom has been adding a “sneaky hidden broadband charge” to customers’ bills for “Router Assurance“, which can add an extra cost of £2.50 per month to the bill. But that’s not the only extra charge to consider, so ISPreview decided to dig a bit deeper.

Alternative UK network operator FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes), which in early March 2025 completed its merger with Zzoomm (here), has in the past few weeks begun to notify staff of further redundancies. Most of the cuts appear to be coming from their internal fibre build and supporting teams, and this also extends to some senior leadership levels.

Managed ISP ASK4, which delivers gigabit-capable broadband to students and residents (renters) in multi-tenant buildings across the UK (inc. parts of Europe), has today announced that they’ve acquired ClearFibre – previously part of Elevate (formerly Telcom) – to help their goal of improving internet connectivity in the UK’s Build-to-Rent (BTR) market.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT Group has reportedly taken the decision to shift its remaining international business into a new standalone division, which is expected to comprise over 8,000 staff and will report separately from the company’s UK business.

A new newspaper report claims that CityFibre is allegedly engaged in “discussions” with Fern Trading, a subsidiary of Octopus Investments, over the potential acquisition of the Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network built by All Points Fibre Networks (APFN) – itself reflecting an earlier consolidation of Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre and Giganet.

A new report claims that debt-laden Telefonica SA is allegedly drawing up plans that would enable them to take control of the 50/50 UK Joint Venture (JV) that it owns with Liberty Global, which reflects broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2). In addition, they also have another JV with InfraVia Capital Partners to build a new fibre network in the UK (nexfibre).

Alternative broadband operator All Points Fibre Networks (APFN) will today formally launch its new Aquila wholesale platform into the wider UK market, which aims to make it simpler and easier for UK ISPs and resellers to gain access to Openreach, BTWholesale, CityFibre and APFN’s combined full fibre (FTTP) network footprints (c. 19 million premises).

The business division of mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has today revealed that their O2 Recycle for Business service, which helps companies of all sizes to trade in their old technology (usually in return for cash, credits or a charitable donation), has helped to save 45,000 devices from waste (earning nearly £330k) since it was relaunched in October 2023.

Rochdale-base UK ISP Zen Internet has today officially launched The Fibre Hub, which essentially aggregates access to a number of major and smaller alternative full fibre broadband networks (Openreach, CityFibre, Trooli, Freedom Fibre etc.) and offers that up to partners (e.g. other ISPs) at the wholesale level.

A relatively new Liverpool-based alternative network operator called River City Networks, which was incorporated on 30th May 2023 and has one Director (Matthew Wilson), has revealed that it plans to deploy a new “gigabit dual fibre and wireless” network to serve premises in several UK cities, specifically in Liverpool, Manchester and London.

Back in November 2024 we reported that global tech company Dotlines (Dotlines UK) were preparing to launch a new broadband ISP called Carnival Internet UK during “early 2025” (here). The good news today is that this has now gone live and pledges to donate 1% of customer bills to charities to fight digital poverty in the UK (they’ll also plant one tree or kelp plant for every month a customer stays).

A new economic and social impact report from Grant Thornton has claimed that Infracapital-backed network operator Fibrus, which is building a full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across several rural parts of the UK, has contributed £431 million (expenditure) to the Northern Ireland economy since beginning operations in 2020.

Alternative network ISP CommunityFibre (CF), which has deployed their 5Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to cover 1.35 million UK premises (mostly in Greater London), has reportedly “posted its maiden profit” after recording earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of £8m in 2024. Customers also grew to 336,000.

Alternative network provider Freedom Fibre (Lila Connect), which have so far grown their FTTP based gigabit broadband network to cover 315,000 premises (Nov 2024) across parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Suffolk and Essex, has over the past week notified staff of more redundancies.
