Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today warned businesses across the UK that they must “act now” in order to be ready for the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to be switched-off in favour of IP-based digital phone (VoIP etc.) services. But many are leaving it until the last minute, “risking network outages and malfunctioning systems“.

VodafoneThree, which reflects the now finalised c.£16bn merger between Vodafone and Three UK (here), has this morning set out a set of post-merger plans for their 4G / 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network coverage, performance and branding. Starting with a 20% average speed boost on 4G for Three and SMARTY customers, and a new broadband partnership with CommunityFibre.

Solihull-based UK business connectivity provider Convergence Group has announced the acquisition of the M247 Group‘s UK focused connectivity (broadband, Ethernet etc.) and IT services operations, which apparently includes its related infrastructure and personnel, for an undisclosed sum.

The UK Government’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, has today delivered her 2025 Spending Review, which included a few bits of new information and updated figures for telecoms. But as well as confirming £1.9bn for broadband and mobile projects (existing commitments), it also appeared to reflect a delay to the gigabit broadband roll-out from 2030 to 2032.

Network operator Fibre 1 Limited, which typically focuses more on Scotland and offers a range of broadband / Ethernet / internet connectivity services to businesses, recently ran into a problem after a disputed invoice briefly led to a court action to appoint a provisional liquidator. But this issue was promptly reversed and settled.

The fourth annual UK Fibre Awards event was held yesterday in London, which saw a number of broadband ISPs and full fibre network builders across several categories pick up awards for their achievements. Some of this year’s winners included Gigaclear for ‘Best Rural Fibre Provider’ and MS3 for ‘Best Overall Fibre Provider’ (they scooped several wins).

One of the UK’s largest utility contractors, Network Plus, which also helps a number of network operators to deploy full fibre broadband infrastructure, has appointed workforce management firm Totalmobile to overhaul how it manages and delivers its field services across the country.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT Group yesterday officially launched their new standalone ‘International’ unit to serve their multinational customers, which was previously predicted (here) to comprise over 8,000 staff and will report separately from the company’s UK business.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) caught our eye this week, which came after several of ISPreview’s industry sources notified us that the operator had “implemented a nationwide change” on 1st June 2025 that affected how SOGEA (FTTC etc.) and FTTP broadband services are provisioned for UK business premises.

The huge £16bn+ merger between mobile network operators Vodafone and Three UK (CK Hutchison) officially completed today, which will change the competitive dynamic of the UK market. The deal is also expected to help improve the national coverage of the latest 5G Standalone (mobile broadband) technologies, but concerns remain over jobs and consumer pricing.

Clevedon-based business, student and residential ISP Glide Group, which is separately still busy expanding their full fibre broadband network, has today announced that a recent funding boost from banking giant NatWest has enabled it to start preparing for an “ambitious expansion” of its high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity infrastructure too.

Broadband operator AllPointsFibre Networks (APFN) has today signed a new deal with UK business ISP Onecom, which enables the internet service provider to provide business-grade Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) connections using APFN’s new aquila wholesale platform (an aggregated network using several operators).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has notified UK broadband ISPs of a 9-month delay to the planned launch of their new Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) v2.0 product for businesses, which appears to have been prompted by Ofcom’s current Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR). The move means that EAD 2 won’t become available until the end of 2026.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT appears to be facing another dispute over workers pay after the Prospect union, which represents a majority of staff at management grades within the UK company, overwhelmingly rejected a “derisory” pay offer from the employer (96% of those who voted elected to reject the offer on turnout of 68%).

Alternative network ISP CommunityFibre (CF) has finally published – much earlier than before – their full annual accounts to the end of 2024. The results reveal that their 5Gbps speed full (FTTP) broadband network ended the year with a coverage of 1.342 million homes (plus c.200k businesses) and residential customers of 336,000 (25% take-up). But employees fell to 737 (2023: 930).
