More bad news today as alternative rural broadband ISP Wildanet, which is busy deploying a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) network across rural parts of Cornwall and Devon in England, has revealed that “external forces” have pushed them into a period of restructuring that is expected to result in a loss of up to 35 jobs (roughly 18% of the workforce).

The UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB), which was setup by the previous government to help crowd-in private investment for infrastructure projects, has today committed £35m to help alternative network provider Wildanet accelerate their rollout of gigabit-capable full fibre broadband across South West England.

It’s still not entirely clear how it happened, but some homes in the tiny rural Cornwall village of Golberdon are currently suffering from a protracted broadband and phone outage after cables belonging to Openreach were accidentally cut last month by an enthusiastic individual using a garden hedge trimmer.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced that their 1.8Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network has now covered over 1 million premises across the South West of England (i.e. Cornwall, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire), which reflects an investment of over £300m.
