Gigabit Broadband Coverage Reaches 80 Percent of UK Homes

The latest independent data has revealed that a shade over 80% of “homes” across the United Kingdom can now access a gigabit-capable broadband ISP connection (1000Mbps+), which is up from just over 72% at the end of last year. The figure drops to 60% when only looking at Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology (up from 45%).

2023 Autumn Statement Boosts UK Full Fibre and 5G Builds – Full Expensing

The Chancellor of the UK government, Jeremy Hunt, has today given his 2023 Autumn Statement, which among other things has announced that the new “Full Expensing” policy will be made permanent. The change will help some full fibre broadband and mobile operators to bring down the cost of their network roll-outs. Planning tweaks are also coming.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) appears to be conducting yet another trial of 2Gbps download speeds (we make this their 4th or 5th in so many years), but this time around they’ve managed to ramp the upload speed back up to 200Mbps. But so far as we can tell, this is currently only being tested on some of their latest XGS-PON lines.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has published their Q3 2023 results, which sees their UK full fibre (FTTP) coverage via nexfibre expand to another 250,800 premises (up from 175.5k in Q2) and their fixed broadband base rise to 5,708,100 (up by 40.8k in Q3 vs -15.3k in Q2). VMO2 has also sold a 16.67% stake in Cornerstone for £360m.

Ofcom Predict 94 Percent of UK Covered by Gigabit Broadband in May 2026

Ofcom has today published the latest edition of their forecast for Planned Network Deployments, which predicts that the full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP lines are on course to cover 91% (27 million premises) of all UK properties by May 2026 – rising to 94% for “gigabit-capable” networks (i.e. FTTP and Cable).

A few months ago Ofcom launched a new consultation that proposed to only allow broadband ISPs to use the terms “fibre” and “full-fibre” on their sites and in contracts “if their network uses fibre-optic cables all the way from the exchange to the home” (FTTP). But feedback suggests that the biggest providers are not supportive.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have published their Q2 2023 results, which saw their fixed broadband base fall by -15,300 in the quarter to total 5,667,300 (vs 28.8k added in Q1) and the operator confirm earlier reports (here) of 2,000 job cuts. But they also accelerated their nextfibre FTTP reach by 175,500 premises.

2023 H1 – UK Full Fibre Broadband Coverage Rises to 53 Percent

The latest biannual summary of UK fixed broadband coverage for H1 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have surged to reach 52.77% of premises (up from 45.13% in H2 2022) and 76.22% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 72.66%). The operator also added 107,800 premises to their new full fibre (FTTP) network (primarily for nexfibre).
