Broadband ISP WightFibre, which operates a network across the Isle of Wight – just off the South Coast of Hampshire in England, today claims to have become the first telecommunications operator in the UK to switch off their old copper network – beating KCOM, Virgin Media and Openreach (BT) to the punch.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has been spotted expanding their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across a number of new towns and villages to the south of Edinburgh in Scotland, which appears to be taking place at the same time as they upgrade some existing areas to XGS-PON technology.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have published their joint Q2 2022 results, which saw fixed broadband reach 5,612,000 customers (up by 16,000 in Q2 2022 vs -1K in Q1) and their FTTP coverage reach another 114,000 premises. The fixed line network now covers 15.9m premises (54% of UK).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has confirmed that they intend to continue to expand their gigabit-capable fixed line connectivity – via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology – to “tens of thousands more premises” across Northern Ireland over the coming years.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H1 2022 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have boosted their reach to 37.61% of premises (up from 30.23% in H2 2021) and 69.24% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 65.22%). But the results vary around England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.53% (19.247 million) in Q4 2021 to end the year on a total of 1.274 billion connections, while the quarterly growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK remained strong at 12.5% (albeit down from 14.8% in Q2 2021).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has responded to a BT complaint by banning a UK website and TV advert for Virgin Media’s Gig1 Fibre broadband package, which saw the operator promote itself as the “UK’s fastest major broadband provider“, after they failed to include sufficient information to verify their comparisons.
