Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve completed – six months ahead of schedule – the first phase of their roll-out under the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which aims to extend geographic 4G (mobile broadband) coverage (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025.

National telecoms giant BT (EE) has reportedly entered into talks that could eventually see them harnessing SpaceX’s global constellation of Starlink ultrafast low-latency broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which could be used to help improve both internet and mobile connectivity to remote areas.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has today official begun certification for the next generation of Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) capable wireless networking devices. The new Wi-Fi 7 standard is expected to “see rapid adoption“, with more than 233 million devices predicted to enter the market in 2024 alone. Just don’t expect to see those dizzy speed claims of 46Gbps in the real-world.

Broadband, mobile and technology giant BT Group (inc. Openreach, Plusnet and EE) has this afternoon revealed the start date for their future CEO, Allison Kirkby, who will now officially replace Philip Jansen in the role on 1st February 2024. Allison was named as the group’s new CEO last year (here), albeit without a solid handover date.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com and conducted in late November 2023, has warned that 13% of mobile users still don’t know if their phone is 4G or 5G ready and 5% say they still use a 3G handset.

Telecoms giant BT (EE), and possibly several other UK network operators, have reportedly missed the 31st December 2023 deadline to remove Huawei’s equipment from their network cores. This puts them at risk of being fined up to 10% of their revenue or £100,000 per day for every day that they fail to comply.

Information supplied by BT and EE to ISPreview has revealed that customers on their fixed broadband ISP network delivered a modest increase in internet traffic over Christmas, but no new records were set. Christmas Day itself saw data traffic peak at 19.57Tbps (Terabits per second), which is up by 7.23% from 18.25Tbps last year.

Surging inflation has meant that the past couple of years have been, to put it mildly, an uncomfortable experience for many broadband ISP and mobile users. In 2022 most consumers saw their prices rise by around 9% (here) and in 2023 that hit over 14% (here), but the predicted hikes for 2024 won’t be as bad.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE has today forecast that Saturday 23rd December 2023 will be the “busiest day for SMS delivery scams“, with criminals targeting shoppers in the last-minute rush before Christmas. The same day in 2022 saw 3 million SMS scam attempts being blocked by the operator – the highest number of the entire year.

Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have this morning become the first providers to announce that their ongoing deployment of a new 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network on the London Underground – in partnership with Boldyn Networks and Nokia – has now been extended to the Elizabeth line for the first time.

Customers who first acquired their mobile number from Vectone Mobile, which one operator says “recently ceased all UK operators“, appear to be facing ongoing problems with routeing of calls and texts after major service problems began a couple of months ago. The bad news is that a change of number may be required to fully resolve it.

The Local Government Association, which represents councils across England and Wales, has warned that while the majority of councils are aware of the looming mobile network closures, almost two-thirds of them are still using devices and systems reliant on 2G and 3G connectivity to at least a small extent.

But mounting costs and limited customer adoption appear to have now put an end to the provider.

Connect has today published their annual UK Mobile Network Test 2024 study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G service performance across 19 cities, 38 towns and along over 10,400km of major roads. Overall, EE managed to come top again, while O2 (VMO2) continued their trend of being bottom.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has published a short progress update on their national plan and timeline for switching off the old 3G data (mobile broadband) network, which reveals some of the first UK locations that will be benefitting from the re-farming of related 3G spectrum for use by modern 5G services.

Mobile network operators including EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2) are facing a class action claim worth “at least” £3.285bn from consumer rights champion Justin Gutmann and the law firm Charles Lyndon, which accuses them of historically overcharging for mobile handsets beyond the end of their contractual term.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a supposedly “definitive” study of fixed broadband speeds across the United Kingdom, which reveals which ISPs are delivering both the best service quality and speeds to consumers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the table ends up being topped by CommunityFibre, Virgin Media and Hyperoptic etc.
