The City of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire UK has announced a new project worth £19.2m with Swedish operator VXFIBER (including subsidiary LilaConnect), which aims to create a publicly-owned and operated, open-access and gigabit-capable, 60 mile long full fibre broadband network with “citywide” coverage by spring 2021.

Business communications provider Digital Wholesale Solutions (formerly Daisy Group), which also supplies a number of ISPs, has announced that they can now also take advantage of Cityfibre’s new Gigabit speed “full fibre” broadband and Dark Fibre / Ethernet network across 27 UK towns and cities.

Sources have informed us that the Portsmouth City Council will award Cityfibre the £3.8m (public funding) Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) contract to rollout a new “gigabit-capable” Ethernet and broadband network across the south coast city (inc. nearby areas), which aims to connect public sector sites.

A new survey of 135 Somerset-based firms, which was undertaken online by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce in partnership with local rural “full fibre” broadband ISP Truespeed, has claimed that 42% of businesses still don’t have access to “fibre broadband” and half of respondents suffered daily or weekly drop-outs in service.

Earlier this year we reported that fibre builder Full Fibre Limited had tentative plans to expand a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network (here) to reach “rural and semi-urban areas” around Devon, Surrey, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. The build is now underway.

ISP Connectus Group has teamed up with former England Rugby Union and British Lions player, Phil Greening, to help guide its efforts to deliver “gigabit capable broadband, VOIP and Cyber Security solutions” to stadia and other venues across the UK. The first to benefit has been the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester.

A new report reveals that Ofcom’s recent decision to soften regulation of BT’s (Openreach) high speed fibre optic Ethernet / data lines in the Central London Area (CLA) has resulted in rival UK ISPs – TalkTalk and Vodafone – lodging an appeal against the decision with the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT).

UK ISP Internet Central has announced that they’ve almost completed Phase One of their new “Gigabolt” project to deploy a Gigabit capable “ultra fast fibre broadband” network to connect a number of businesses in the town of Stafford (Staffordshire, England), with those on the large Beacon Business Park being the first to benefit.

A new survey of 208 workers, self-employed individuals and small business owners, which was conducted in May 2019 by Consumer Intelligence on behalf of broadband ISP Onecom, has found that the average SME business spent £2,052 a year on telecommunications services (up by around 40% from Ofcom’s c.£1,400 figure in 2016).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) will today soft launch a new Dark Fibre X product into the UK market that is based off Ofcom’s somewhat restrictive design, which for the time being only focuses upon the limited inter-exchange connectivity market.

Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that a mistake in compensation payments (forms part of a Service Level Guarantee) for their high capacity 1-10Gbps Ethernet Backhaul Direct (EBD) product means they will have to refund UK communications providers (ISPs) around £14 million.

SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) claims to have found a disparity in the connectivity needs of London-based UK business verses businesses in regional towns. In response they’ve today launched five new optical-enabled data centres in Northampton, Milton Keynes, Hemel, Stickley Park and Newport, Wales to help.

Ofcom has today opened a new investigation to examine whether BT has complied with its charging obligations, which occurred after the UK operator indicated to the regulator that it may not have correctly billed for Excess Construction Charges (ECCs) when providing new business lines (Ethernet services etc.).

Hampshire-based UK business ISP Giganet has today launched their own take on Cityfibre’s new Flex Ethernet product, which for £149 +vat per month will give you a guaranteed rate of 200Mbps (symmetric) that can burst to 1Gbps “on-demand” and with “zero additional charges” (provided there’s enough spare capacity).
