Wireless ISP Luminet has announced that their “Fibre Air” wireless network, which can offer customers ‘up to’ 1Gbps of symmetrical broadband Internet connectivity, is now being made available to wholesale by its partners (currently numbering more than 50) under a new channel programme.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has issued an update on the £5.6m deal with Edinburgh City Council in Scotland, which is extending their existing Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network in the city to around 150km. The work is now expected to complete by the end of next month.

Some customers who use Virgin Media’s latest SuperHub 3.0 (ARRIS TG2492S/CE) broadband router have spotted that the new kit appears to suffer from an unusual problem when running in modem mode, which causes the related Ethernet port to stop working for a few seconds every 35 minutes or so.

The first businesses have connected to the newly re-branded Bristol Network (formerly B-Net) in Bristol City (South West England), which is a large fibre optic network that use to be owned by the local authority until two ISPs, Net Support UK and ITS Technology Group, began to commercialise it last year.

The outcome of Ofcom’s recent Business Connectivity Review (here and here), which gave Openreach’s (BT) competitors “physical access” to its fibre optic cables (i.e. allowing them to “take direct control of the connection“), clearly hasn’t gone down well at urban fibre optic broadband builder Cityfibre.

A new Opinium survey of 500 businesses in the United Kingdom, which was commissioned by an ISP called Beaming, has claimed that 3.9 million enterprises (72% of businesses) suffered “up to” 8 Internet outages and 43 hours of downtime each during 2015 and they could have lost productivity worth an estimated £12.3 billion.

The enterprise division of SSE Telecoms has today announced that their fibre optic network has been expanded to a further 30 of BT’s UK exchanges, which is on top of their existing 13,700km long and 232 Point of Presence (PoP) strong UK-wide fibre network.

Cable operator Virgin Media Business has announced that nearly 1,500 businesses in 125 buildings located inside the Leeds City Centre area will gain access to their symmetric 100Mbps or faster broadband service, thanks to the operator’s on-going network expansion.

BTOpenreach has today detailed the second phase of reductions to their business and ISP focused Ethernet products, such as Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) and Ethernet Backhaul Direct (EBD), which are due to be introduced from 1st May 2016 (some others will follow on 1st August 2016).

As expected the European Commission has approved Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR) proposals, which among other things pledged to open up access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network, cut leased line (Ethernet) prices and deliver quicker installations. But the regulator did reject two of the EC’s proposed tweaks.
