The UK telecoms regulator has today decided to launch a wider investigation after Vodafone complained that BTOpenreach had failed to meet its obligations to them by both “delaying provision” of its Ethernet (high-capacity data line) services without their consent and then “failing to compensate“.

The national telecoms regulator has opened a new investigation after Vodafone complained that BTOpenreach failed to meet its obligations to them by both “delaying provision” of its Ethernet (high-capacity data line) services without their consent and then “failing to compensate” for that delay.

BTOpenreach has announced that the new 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) variant of their point-to-point Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) data connectivity product for ISPs is now exiting the pilot phase and will soon be available to order from 21st September 2015.

After several years and various legal challenges the UK telecoms regulator has proposed what could be the final resolution to a long running dispute relating to BT’s overcharging for business Ethernet services, which initially required them to repay £94.8m to Sky (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk, Virgin Media, Cable & Wireless Worldwide (Vodafone) and Verizon.

The Herefordshire County Council are working to deliver an alternative “ultrafast broadband” solution to help businesses within the Hereford Enterprise Zone at Rotherwas, which can already receive expensive leased lines or cheaper FTTC connectivity from BT; but apparently neither of those are good enough.

The national telecoms regulator has today proposed a raft of “significant real-terms price reductions” for mobile operators, broadband ISPs, public sector organisations and businesses that buy BT’s high-speed wholesale Leased Line links, which form part of a market worth £2bn across the United Kingdom.

In a surprise move Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review (BCMR2016) has done a U-turn on its 2012 policy by proposing that rival ISPs, specifically those that provide Leased Lines, should be granted access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network (i.e. un-lit fibre optic lines that have spare capacity for coping with future demand).

Sigh, it happened again, I was in the middle of streaming a movie over the home WiFi network while simultaneously making toast in the kitchen, and suddenly it stopped. Moments later a little icon pops up to torment me with the news, “Internet Connection Lost!“, it exclaims while clearly oblivious to my snorting sounds of frustration. Where did it go? Who took my Internet? And if its lost, how can I find it again?

Urban focused ISP Hyperoptic has announced that their Gigabit (1Gbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) broadband network has today been expanded to cater for businesses across various parts of the 12 UK cities in which they currently have a presence.

Industry sources inform ISPreview.co.uk that BTOpenreach will later today or tomorrow announced another round of seemingly significant price reductions for their business Ethernet services, such as the Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) and Ethernet Backhaul Direct (EBD) products. The telecoms regulator has started a new consultation that proposes to expand the remit of its existing wireless telegraphy legislation in order to tackle electronic devices that create “undue interference“, which among other things could target consumers that make use of bad Powerline Adapters (HomePlug) for their home computer networks.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website ad for ZyXEL’s PLA4201 500Mbps Mini Powerline Ethernet Adaptor after two people complained that the performance claims were “misleading“, not least because the adapter itself only offered a 100Mbps (RJ-45) capable Ethernet port. Admittedly this isn’t strictly ISP related, but it’s still interesting.

BT has today confused fibre optic connection terminologies a little by detailing their first pilot for a “new form” of Fibre-to-the-Basement / Building (FTTB) broadband technology in the City of London area, which uses VDSL2 over copper like FTTC but is optimised for basements / comms rooms where the operator has a wayleave/permission from the landlord and access to power.

Rising costs and a lack of uptake have forced Dorset County Council to give up on their Dorset Public Sector Network (DPSN), which became operational via Kcom (KC) in 2012 and has since exceeded its budget by £340k. Another £200k per year could be added to this overspend until the agreement ends in 2018.

BTWholesale’s plan to boost its fibre optic based Ethernet footprint and big business connectivity, which started earlier this year, has now seen several new data centre PoP (Point of Presence) sites go live at TelecityGroup in Joule House (Manchester), Equinix [LDN5] in Slough and a further one in Leeds. More are set to follow.
