Truespeed Engineers at Work

Alternative gigabit broadband operators Truespeed and Freedom Fibre, which back in February 2026 revealed their intention to merge (here), have today announced the formal completion of that deal and the creation of a newly consolidated brand under the FreedomTruespeed Group.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has issued a second announcement today to confirm that the previously stalled Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for North Shropshire (Lot 25.02), which was originally held by Freedom Fibre until they “mutually agreed to descope the remaining 8,500 premises” in June 2025 (here), has also been taken on by Openreach (BT).

The former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of alternative UK broadband operator Freedom Fibre, Shawn Nolan, was recently awarded £105,500 in compensation by an Employment Tribunal after he raised concerns that the company’s engineers were frequently carrying out fibre optic work on private land without consent.

Challenger broadband provider Home Unity has today announced that they’re expanding their reach across the North West and West Midlands by onboarding with Freedom Fibre’s alternative full fibre (FTTP) network, which is itself in the process of merging with Truespeed (here) in order to cover a total combined footprint of 412,000 premises ‘Ready for Service’.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has today confirmed that the previously stalled Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for Cheshire (Lot 17), which was originally held by Freedom Fibre until they “mutually agreed to terminate” it in March 2025 (here), has now been picked up by Openreach (BT). But it’s changed a bit in the process.

Aviva-backed alternative gigabit broadband operator Truespeed, which has rolled out their full fibre (FTTP) network across 177,000 premises (44k customers) in rural parts of South West England, has today confirmed that they’ve reached a major merger agreement with Freedom Fibre to consolidate their two networks.

But Openreach (BT) may now be set to take it on.

Aviva-backed alternative gigabit broadband operator Truespeed, which has only just merged with County Broadband to create a single full fibre operator covering 177,000 premises (RFS) and 41,000 customers in England (here), is reportedly in talks with Freedom Fibre about the possibility of consolidating into an even larger network.

Broadband provider iDNET has recently added support for three additional alternative Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks, including Trooli, Netomnia (business plans only) and Freedom Fibre, which is on top of their partnerships with existing networks including CityFibre, Openreach, MS3 and FullFibre.

Internet provider Pop Telecom has today become the latest ISP to join Freedom Fibre’s alternative open access network, which has so far grown their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) based infrastructure to cover 350,000 premises and connected 24,000 customers across various parts of England and North Wales.

The MP for North Shropshire in England, Helen Morgan (Liberal Democrat), has called on the Government to take urgent action in its ongoing attempts to find a solution after network provider Freedom Fibre scaled back their £24m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for the region in June 2025.

Network operator Freedom Fibre, which has so far grown their FTTP (XGS-PON) based gigabit broadband network to cover 350,000 premises across various parts of England and North Wales, has today made a new 160Mbps and faster 2.5Gbps (2500Mbps) tier available to their broadband ISP partners at wholesale.

The current owners of internet provider Yayzi Broadband appear to be in the process of establishing a new provider called nufibre, which is due to launch in about a month and will be offering FTTP broadband packages via a selection of network operators (the website shows logos for Openreach, Trooli, Freedom Fibre, MS3, CityFibre and others).
