Lord Smith of Finsbury (Chris Smith), who is Chairman of the United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Agency, has put down another complaint against ISPs that promote slower hybrid-fibre FTTC (VDSL) connections as “fibre optic broadband“. Apparently it’s because pure FTTP/H lines are still too “niche,” but he acknowledges that this may change in the future.

The Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that UK ISP Hyperoptic did not break ad rules by describing their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) broadband network as “true fibre” and “full fibre optic broadband“, despite the last bit of connectivity into homes being done over Cat5e copper cable.

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic, which are already deploying their ultrafast 1Gbps (Gigabit per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/B) broadband network into 13 cities across the United Kingdom, have confirmed that they will be adding seven new “hyper-cities” to that list.

The French government has now officially introduced a new decree that makes it much more difficult for broadband ISPs to advertise their services using “fibre optic” terminology if the network doesn’t actually deliver a fibre cable to your home. If only the UK would follow suit.

Thousands of residents in Salford (Greater Manchester, England) look set to benefit after fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic announced that the local council had become the first in the UK to roll-out their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across its housing portfolio.

The Government’s Broadband Deliver UK programme has today published its latest quarterly performance report to the end of 2015, which reveals a bit more detail about the project’s progress. Overall 3,625,369 extra premises have now benefited and can order superfast broadband, with £406,918,848 of BDUK funding spent.
