Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has announced that their Gigabit (1000Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now live in the city of Birmingham, with Queens College Chambers being the first residential development in the middle of the city to benefit.

The latest information on the availability of true ultrafast fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) services, most of which are capable of delivering Gigabit class speeds (1000Mbps), has estimated that some 351,642 premises in the United Kingdom are now within reach of such a service (up from 251,522 last year).

After 20 months of waiting BT finally appears to be progressing its pledge to spend £50m on expanding the commercial roll-out of superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P/B + FTTrN) services to 400,000 extra premises in UK cities, with the first to benefit being in London (Kensington, Chelsea and Tech City etc.).

BTOpenreach appears to have expanded their pilots of ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable VDSL2 based Fibre-to-the-Basement (FTTB) and Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN) broadband technology to parts of Gatwick airport (West Sussex) and Rotherhithe (London), respectively.

The debate over whether or not broadband ISPs that don’t sell a pure “fibre optic” (FTTH/P) broadband connection should be allowed to use such terminology in their adverts is nothing new, but a new ruling by the Government of France shows that some countries are taking a stand.

Hyperoptic, which is deploying a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB/P) network around parts of 12 UK cities, has surveyed 3,000 British people to conclude that 67% work from home at least once a month and 93% work longer hours when at home. But 72% also claim to feel more productive in the office, with poor home broadband taking the blame.
