Sky Broadband will today become the first ISP in the United Kingdom to start advertising their headline packages using average download speeds. On top of that they’ve tweaked some of their broadband prices / contract lengths and launched a new dedicated “Tech Team” to boost customer support.

TalkTalk has today decided to complement their 18 month contract terms by adding a lengthy 24 month option (i.e. 12 and 18 month terms are also available) and they’ve tweaked some of their broadband bundle discounts to match, although the new offers won’t last forever.

Ofcom has today published their annual Connected Nations 2016 report, which confirms that 89% of UK premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband service (up from 83% in 2015), with take-up hitting 31% (up from 27%). But only 1.7% (498K premises) can get “full fibre” (FTTP/H).

Openreach (BT) will shortly begin offering ISPs 6 months of free rental on new PCP Only (Self-Install) FTTC / VDSL2 based “fibre broadband” connections when taken as a Simultaneous Provide service (e.g. broadband and phone line rental at the same time), but only on “eligible [street] cabinets“.

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband project in England, which recently worked with Openreach (BT) to expand “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to 90% of the county (59,500 extra premises), has given the green light to a £7.8m extension that will bring the availability to 97.4% by 2019.

From early next year Openreach (BT) will begin offering Saturday appointment slots for PCP Only (self-install) based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband provisions, which seems intended to help tackle occasions where the operator’s engineers are facing “significant demand“.

Openreach has announced that they will soon give UK ISPs the ability to offer 5 months of free rental on their 40Mbps FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” service, which will apply to customers who currently only receive sub-10Mbps speeds via their existing copper lines (e.g. ADSL).

TalkTalk has informed us that their Black Friday offer removes all setup fees from their broadband packages and TV bundles, which for example could save £25 off their ‘up to’ 38Mbps “Faster Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) service. Various half-price TV offers will also run on their Sky Cinema and Sports content.

Shropshire-based ISP Aquiss has announced that all of their ‘up to’ 19Mbps ADSL and ‘up to’ 38-76Mbps unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages are being offered free for the first 3 months of service to new orders until 30th November, although this doesn’t include phone line rental (optional service).

The Managing Director and Founder of broadband ISP Call Flow Solutions, Andy Conibere, has told ISPreview.co.uk that the future could be “very bright“, provided regulation is introduced to protect alternative networks from being “unfairly squeezed out by the dominant suppliers” (BT, Virgin Media etc.).

Alternative network provider Call Flow Solutions has announced the completion of their Broadband Delivery UK contract for the ‘Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead’ in Berkshire (England), which has expanded the reach of their 30Mbps+ capable FTTC broadband network to an extra 1,750 premises.
