The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme has posted its latest progress update to 30th September 2016, which reveals that some 4,168,739 additional premises in the United Kingdom can now access a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of a £1.6bn public investment.

TalkTalk has published their latest interim results for the 6 months to 30th September 2016 (H1 2017), which saw them lose fewer on-net broadband customers (-29,000) in the period to total 3,967,000 and 21% of those (779K) take their FTTC “fibre broadband” products (with 2,500 on FTTP in York).

Customers using one of Openreach’s (BT) ‘up to’ 40-80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband lines might benefit from a free speed boost next year when the operator adopts a new default target downstream noise margin of 3dB.

The Superfast Essex project in England, which is working with Openreach (BT) and Gigaclear to roll-out “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) networks to 95% of the county by 2019, yesterday put out a new tender for their future Phase 3 roll-out that will aim to push coverage to 97% by 2020.

The Deputy Leader of Shropshire Council, Steve Charmley, has accused Openreach (BT) of embarrassing itself after their new FTTC “fibre broadband” Street Cabinet in the village of Whittington ran out of capacity sooner than expected. It wouldn’t be so bad, except BT have a base in the same area.

The Coventry City Council in Warwickshire (England) have announced that the next phase of their roll-out of “superfast broadband” connectivity around the region will be supported by £15m worth of grants and aims to extend the network coverage to a further 8,000 local homes and businesses.

Customers of BTBusiness may today welcome the news that the ISP has adopted an ‘up to’ 76Mbps capable FTTC “Infinity” broadband speed as their “new entry level for its business fibre,” which means that existing subscribers on their ‘up to’ 38Mbps package have gained a free upgrade.

Earlier this year we reported on how people in the Cheshire village of Ollerton were ready to pay BTOpenreach £35,000 to get a “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) service installed (here). Today we learn that BT has made use of the Government’s 2Mbps rural USC subsidy to help pay for the roll-out.

The Welsh Government’s Superfast Cymru contract with BT, which has been working to roll-out “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 96% of Wales, has been criticised by Assembly Members for failing to deliver on its original promise to bring 30Mbps+ capable networks to all premises by 2015.

Openreach (BT) hope to publish a final reference offer for their new Dark Fibre Access (DFA) product by the end of 2016, which will give rival ISPs “physical access” to their fibre optic cables. But a recent progress update reveals that disagreements over contracts, repair times and fees have yet to be resolved.

A new report has revealed that the joint £6.5m Broadband Delivery UK and Isle of Wight Council project to expand the coverage of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network on the Isle of Wight (resides just off England’s central south coast) has come in under budget to the tune of £1.7m+.

The latest quarterly (Q3 2016 calendar) results have been published by BT today, which reveal that their retail broadband base now tops 9,193,000 customers (up by +76K, unchanged from Q2) and 4,473,000 of those take their ‘Infinity‘ (FTTC/P) superfast broadband (up by +216K vs +181K in Q2).
