BT has released its latest Q1 2016 results (calendar), which reveals that their retail division has a total of 9,041,000 broadband subscribers (up by +1.045 million in Q1 vs +130K in Q4 2015) and 4.076m of those are taking their FTTC/P based BTInfinity superfast broadband service (up by +214k vs +250K at the end of 2015).

Telecoms giant BT has landed itself in hot water again after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) was forced to ban three of their TV adverts for making “misleading” BTInfinity (FTTC) “fibre broadband” quality claims versus rival UK ISPs Sky Broadband and Virgin Media.

An odd situation has erupted in Norfolk (England) after the 85-year-old owner of a bungalow on Framingham Earl Road (Yelverton) hampered Openreach’s (BT) efforts to conduct maintenance and upgrade work on their PCP Street Cabinet. The pensioner claims the cabinet is built on his private land, but the local authority says it’s public land.

The Highland and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in Scotland has today announced the next batch of areas that will benefit from their on-going work to make BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 84% of the region’s premises by the end of 2016.

The Cornwall Council in South West England has unveiled tentative plans for a third “Superfast 2” contract (total value of up to £16.25m) to further expand the local availability of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) services to some of the approximately 39,400 premises that have yet to achieve such speeds.

Openreach (BT) recently began the roll-out of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP) technology to their ECI based Street Cabinets, which can improve the performance of their 40-80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL) lines. Over the past two months a growing number of UK councils have begun to consult on how best to use money that has been clawed back (gainshare) from BT in order to further extend local broadband coverage, but this time around they all seem to agree that NGA connectivity starts at 30Mbps, not 24Mbps or 15Mbps.

Sky Broadband has quietly tweaked the prices for their ‘up to’ 38Mbps Sky Fibre (25GB usage) and Sky Fibre Unlimited packages, with the former being free for the first 12 months of service (£10 a month thereafter) and the latter being £10 per month for the first 12 months (£20 thereafter).

Internet provider BT has today replaced their old Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL) based 38Mbps BTInfinity 1 broadband service with a new up to 52Mbps package speed, which they brag is “a faster standard fibre service” than you can get from Sky Broadband, TalkTalk or Virgin Media.
