After a long wait we’re pleased to report that the B4RN Cheshire project, which as the name suggests is a region specific off-shoot of rural focused full fibre UK ISP B4RN, is finally about to start digging work for Route 1 (i.e. connecting Capenhurst to Shotwick).

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today revealed that they added a further +2,000 on-net broadband customers to total 4,289,000 during the first three months of 2019 (down sharply from +44k added in the previous quarter). Work on their FibreNation roll-out of “full fibre” (FTTH) broadband is also set to begin this Summer.

Plucky rural UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is deploying a community built and funded 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to remote premises in several counties across England, expects to achieve 6,000 live connections by the end of June and has raised £2m via crowdfunding.

The UK Government has today officially launched their new £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which was originally announced during the 2018 Budget and aims to encourage an “outside-in” approach to building new ultrafast broadband ISP networks by focusing on helping to connect rural areas.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear has been fined £10,339.17 in Somerset UK after it admitted that some of its work, which involved deploying a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network around the small market town of Wellington, had failed to comply with the 1991 New Road and Street Works Act.

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve wisely “taken over” rival ISP Sky Broadband’s 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in Swandicote (Derbyshire), which was originally built as part of a trial and is believed to have covered up to 5,000 local homes.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre and UK ISP partner Vodafone have today announced that the first residents in the city of Stirling (Scotland) are now connecting to their new £10m and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network. The build is due to complete next year.

A new study has ranked the top 20 cities across the United Kingdom by comparing their fixed line broadband coverage, performance and 4G mobile network availability in order to produce an index score. Overall London came out as being the UK’s “best digitally connected city,” albeit mainly thanks to its mobile coverage.

Fixed line ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK has released their latest quarterly results to the end of March (Q4 FY19), which saw them add another 50,000 fixed broadband customers (up from +46K in the previous quarter) to total 575,000. Plus they’ve announced the 3rd July 2019 launch of their UK 5G network.

The Chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission, Sir John Armitt, has warned the UK Government not to merely “pay lip service” to their proposals for improving broadband, 5G, energy and transport by “restating existing policy” and offering “vague promises” when they set a National Infrastructure Strategy (NIS) this autumn.

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has decided that it has too many different named broadband and “full fibre” programmes and as a result they’ve today opted to simplify by aligning all of them under just two overarching programmes – ‘The UK Fibre Programme‘ and ‘Building Digital UK‘.

A new UK ISP called The 4th Utility (not to be confused with this provider of an identical name), which is targeting the new build homes market (large residential buildings / MDU), has announced that they’ve just connected their first customer to a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network and many more will follow.

The Court of Appeal for the British overseas territory of Gibraltar has ruled in favour of privately owned FTTP broadband operator, GibFibre (ISP GibFibreSpeed), after it was rejected access to the Mount Pleasant Data Centre, which is owned by rival Gibtelecom (wholly owned Government company), and the local regulator failed to help.

BT Group’s new CEO has released his first full year results to the end of March 2019 (Q4 18/19 financial), which finds that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has grown its coverage to 3.2 million UK premises (up from 2.6m last quarter). Take-up of FTTP is 24.54% and G.fast 1.24%.

Telecoms giant Openreach (BT) has today confirmed a significant ramping-up of their UK “Fibre First” rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which will now aim to cover 4 million homes and businesses by March 2021 (up from 3m) and an ambition for 15 million by around 2025 (up from 10m).

A new UK Community Interest Company (CIC) called Pure Fibre Housing, which is part of the new i4 Technology Group that also encompasses commercial operator British Fibre Networks, has announced that it’s deploying 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband to two new build home developments in North Wales.

New UK ISP toob, which was only recently setup by several of Vodafone’s former directors (here) and soon after secured an investment of £75m (here), has announced that the south coast city of Southampton (Hampshire) will be the first to benefit from their rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network.
