The General Manager of “ultrafast broadband” at TalkTalk has switched sides and will soon join Virgin Media to become an Executive Director of Connectivity. The move comes ahead of both the ISP’s commercial G.fast launch and after their proposal to rollout 1Gbps FTTH/P to 3 million premises.

The London borough of Southwark has signed a new deal with 1Gbps UK fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which should result in around 53,000 council homes and 46,000 other homes in the area (at no cost to the taxpayer) gaining access to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/B) network.

As first hinted in February (here), Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that they will hire 3,500 new trainee engineers over the next 12 months. The recruits are needed to help the operator deliver on its promise to make 1Gbps capable FTTP “full fibre” broadband available to 3 million premises by 2020.

The UK government has launched a new nationwide Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which is funded by a pot of £67m and aims to provide vouchers worth up to £3000 for businesses (SME) or £500 to residents to help with the costs of connecting to “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband.

The central England city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire UK has today announced a new deal with Swedish FTTH provider VXFIBER, which pledges to roll-out an “open access” and Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband network to cover both “residents and businesses.”

The Chancellor, Philip Hammond, has given his 2018 Spring Statement and confirmed the first £95m allocation from the government’s £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund, which was setup to stimulate commercial investment in “gigabit capable” broadband (rural and urban).

A new study conducted by economic consultancy Regeneris, which was commissioned by Cityfibre, has predicted that the total economic impact of deploying “full fibre” (FTTP/H) ultrafast broadband ISP networks, across 100 distinct UK city and towns, could reach £120bn over a 15 year period.

Last year we revealed that a new community project with Virgin Media would extend the operator’s 350Mbps FTTH broadband and TV network to 12 small rural villages (around 4,000 premises) in the Test and Dun Valleys of Hampshire (England). Today the build phase has finally begun.

A newspaper report has claimed that the UK government’s on-going ‘Telecoms Infrastructure Review‘ is giving serious consideration to the old idea of adopting regional franchises, which they claim might help boost the coverage of “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband, particularly in rural areas.

The M&G Investment Management fund has offered to buy ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP) rural broadband ISP Gigaclear for £270 million (all cash), which is backed by the UK operator’s largest shareholder Infracapital (43.2% holding). The offer is due to be discussed next week.

A small group of volunteers from Puddington, Burton and Capenhurst in West Cheshire (England) have joined forces with the team from B4RN in order to launch B4RN Cheshire, which will further extend the operator’s 1Gbps community built and funded fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has filed for a Judicial Review of last year’s decision by the UK Advertising Standards Authority, which ruled that it was “not materially misleading” for ISPs to describe slower hybrid fibre services (e.g. FTTC / HFC DOCSIS) as “fibre broadband.”

The Norfolk County Council in England will next Tuesday take a decision on how to fund a future phase of their Better Broadband for Norfolk (BBfN) project, which could see them choosing to borrow £11m in order to help extend “superfast broadband” to 100% of premises “as soon as we can.”

The Head of Regulatory Affairs at Cityfibre, Alex Blowers, has criticised Ofcom’s focus on regulating wholesale access to Openreach’s (BT) legacy UK copper network down to cost and called on them to rethink their strategy in order to better support the new generation of “full fibre” (FTTH/P) ultrafast broadband.
