The digital divide between UK rural and urban areas is not a new or unfamiliar problem, although a new study from academics at Aberdeen University in Scotland has warned that the issue “will persist for the foreseeable future,” unless public policy does more to embrace alternative network providers.

The Government of the United Kingdom has this week started a new consultation on their proposal to introduce 100% business rates relief for new “full-fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband networks (estimated to be worth £60m), which will run from 1st April 2017 to 31st March 2022.

Utility infrastructure provider GTC (Brookfield Utilities UK) appears to have responded to Openreach’s (BT) increasingly attractive FTTP “full fibre” broadband offer for new build home developers by enhancing their rival proposition via the Home Builders Federation, which makes it more accessible.

Last year “industry sources” indicated that Vodafone could be planning to build their own “full fibre” network in the United Kingdom (here). A new report claims that they are now in “early but serious” talks with Openreach (BT) about the prospect of a joint investment on a “large-scale” FTTP/H build.

The Superfast Cornwall project, which has a long term aspiration to deliver 99% coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) by 2020, has today taken the next step by signing a new deal with Openreach (BT) that will put a further 7,000+ premises within reach of 1Gbps “full fibre” (FTTP) by 2019.

Fibre optic broadband provider Gigaclear has this month marked the fifth anniversary of their ultrafast 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) network going live in the rural villages of Appleton and Eaton (Oxfordshire), which were among the first in England to get their service.

Last month Openreach (BT) launched a new consultation that hinted at a large-scale deployment of “full fibre” FTTP ultrafast broadband, which could cover up to 10 million premises by around 2025 (here). Today a leaked copy of that document has pegged the cost at between £3bn to £6bn.

The Newcastle City Council has today announced that Hyperoptic have been chosen to supply their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises / Building (FTTP/B) based ultrafast broadband network to 25 of the local authority’s social housing developments. The roll-out is already underway.

Optical fibre ISP Hyperoptic, which is focused on connecting big residential and office buildings inside 28 large UK cities and towns, has launched a new range of 20Mbps, 100Mbps and 1Gbps capable standalone FTTP/B broadband packages that are aimed squarely at connecting students.

The telecoms regulator has today set out “detailed pricing proposals” for Openreach’s (BT) new Duct and Pole Access product, which allows their existing telegraph poles and underground cable ducts to be used by rivals in order to deploy new ultrafast broadband services (e.g. FTTP/H).

Grant Shapps’s (MP) cross-party British Infrastructure Group, which is supported by 57 MPs, has published its latest Broadbad 2.0 report, which among other things calls for consumers in the United Kingdom to be compensated for sub-10Mbps broadband speeds. Sadly it also makes some mistakes.

After a chaotic start to the year BT has today published their latest report for Q2 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,286,000 subscribers (up by 19K vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.1 million “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) users (up 170K vs 211K in Q1).

Ultrafast fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has announced that their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/B) broadband network, which is available across parts of 28 UK cities and towns, now covers 350,000 homes and they’ve raised another £100m to boost the roll-out. Next stop.. 5 million homes by 2025!

The B4RN for Casterton project has completed the primary roll-out of their 1Gbps community built and funded fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network to the rural Cumbria village of Casterton and several surrounding areas, which was supported by £91,700 of local funding.

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear and national operator Openreach (BT) have won the Phase 3 roll-out contracts for Berkshire in England, which will see a mix of 1Gbps FTTP and up to 80Mbps FTTC broadband being used to reach an additional 13,500 homes and businesses by the end of 2019.

The cross-party British Infrastructure Group (BIG), which is led by Grant Shapps (Conservative MP for Welwyn Hatfield), will next week publish their new Broadbad 2.0 report that is expected to highlight a number of problems with the state of broadband in the UK and call for improvements.
