London-focused UK ISP CommunityFibre has today confirmed that the roll-out of their Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has now reached their first target of 100,000 premises. On top of that they have plans in place that should see this grow to 370,000 homes via 40 of London’s largest landlords.

The Government has just approved some changes to the rules and eligibility criteria for both their £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) and the £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which effectively harmonises both schemes and helps the funding get to the right areas.

UK ISP Vodafone has today finally confirmed our report from last month (here), which revealed that their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network with Cityfibre had gone live in the city of Cambridge. The deployment is costing £20m and will ultimately cover around 60,000 local premises.

At present Openreach (BT) already provides their Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to UK new build home developments of 30+ plots for free, while smaller builds could only get a discount. The good news is that they’ve today extended this free build offer to new sites of just 20+ plots.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) appears to have added 7 new UK locations to their roll-out plan for Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which largely reflects the outcome from a recent consolidation of smaller builds in to fewer, but larger, build areas.

Fixed wireless ISP Symmetris Broadband, which has built a number of networks across rural parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, appears to have just completed the build of their very first 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in the small neighbouring villages of Pedham and Hemblington.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has given its approval to the selection of a preferred bidder (due to be named within the next few weeks) to deliver on their Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) project, which originally aimed to deploy a 450km long Gigabit speed fibre network to serve 1,300 public sector sites.

A new London-based “full fibre” network builder called People’s Fibre has just entered the market, which is promising to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network “across the UK,” albeit focusing upon areas where such networks are currently non-existent or poor.

The Scottish Government‘s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has today issued an update on the progress of their much delayed £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which confirms how many premises will benefit in each area and what technologies will be used. Sadly the rollout will complete in 2023, rather than 2021.

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which last year started the £85m+ roll-out of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Northern Ireland (here) and has also been linked to Project Stratum (here), has today unveiled the next batch of areas in County Down to benefit from their infrastructure.

Cable and fibre optic ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has just completed another build of their 516Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and TV network in County Durham, which has just gone live for 4,500 homes in the Sunderland town of Houghton-le-Spring, including the surrounding areas of Shiney Row and Penshaw.

The Portsmouth City Council, which last year awarded Cityfibre the £3.8m Local Full Fibre Network contract to rollout a new “gigabit-capable” Ethernet and broadband network to 200 public sector sites (here), has confirmed that UK biz ISP MLL Telecom have been chosen to provide services on the related Solent Network framework.

Earlier today UK ISP KCOM unveiled Phase One of a new £100m project to extend the coverage of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into new parts of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire (here). Now the provider’s MD, Sean Royce, has revealed details of its initial rollout areas and other plans for 2020.

The Suffolk County Council (SCC) appear set to appointed a supplier for their new £10m+ state aid fuelled Phase 3 Superfast Broadband contract, which could see 7,000 additional premises (mostly in rural areas) being reached by faster UK ISP networks; most likely via “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today launched their first combined Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26 (FTMR), which proposes major changes to help boost investment in “full fibre” broadband and high capacity Ethernet (leased line) services for both the residential and business connectivity markets.

The incumbent broadband ISP for East Yorkshire and Hull, KCOM, has today announced the “first phase” of a major new £100m project to expand the coverage of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service beyond their current network area, which will initially reach new parts of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Openreach has unveiled some new special offers to help ISPs facilitate their analogue telephone (WLR) to digital voice (VoIP), and copper to “full fibre” (FTTP), Exchange Upgrade trials (here, here and here) in Mildenhall (Suffolk) and Salisbury (Wiltshire) respectively.
