The Welsh Government have changed their “processes” in order to make it harder for professional lobbyists’ to access ministers, which occurred after a “misunderstanding” resulted in lobbyist Daran Hill attending a meeting between the Economy Minister, Ken Stakes, and UK fibre optic broadband ISP Cityfibre.

Last week saw Openreach (BT) publish a Final Reference Offer for their revised Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product, which is intended to make it cheaper and easier for UK ISPs to deploy their own “full fibre” broadband networks via existing cable ducts and poles. But some challenges remain.

The former leader of the UK Liberal Democrat party and MP for South Lakes, Tim Farron, has accused the Chancellor (Philip Hammond) of “fobbing off local communities” by effectively imposing a “tax rise” on rural broadband ISP B4RN with its decision to withdraw their EIS tax relief.

The latest forecast from the Government’s £1.8bn Broadband Delivery UK programme appears to now be predicting that fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable ISP networks will cover 97% of premises by March 2020, which is slightly down on some previous 98%+ remarks (not official targets).

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), which is a key voice for the UK internet industry and represents 200 members (broadband ISPs etc.), has today announced an official partnership with Openreach (BT) to build on their existing membership and reflect a shared “ambition to deliver full broadband coverage nationwide.“

New internet provider Zzoomm, which was launched last month by Gigaclear’s founder and aspires to cover 1 million homes with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology within the next 5 years (here), has announced that their network will deliver broadband speeds of 10Gbps to those they cover.

The Cambridgeshire County Council in England has today set an “ambitious new target,” which will see them aim to achieve “over” 30% coverage of Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP etc.) broadband connectivity across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by 2022, among other things.

Cityfibre’s £30m deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in Peterborough (Cambridgeshire) has suffered complaints after the City Councillor for Park ward, John Peach, highlighted some “absolutely atrocious” reinstatement work.

Budget orientated UK ISP TalkTalk has revealed that their roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the city of York has now covered 33,000 homes and businesses. The final 21,000 premises are due to “follow this year” (54,000 total) and customer satisfaction is high.

Good news. The remote Shetland Islands Council has secured a public investment of £1.91m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund, which will be used to extend their existing Gigabit fibre network to include public sector sites (schools, council buildings etc.) on the North Isles of Yell and Unst.

The state aid supported Fastershire project, which is working to extend superfast broadband services across Gloucestershire and Herefordshire in England, has announced that a revised “full fibre” (FTTP) roll-out plan from UK ISP partner Gigaclear could be approved and published by the end of this month.

Cityfibre has announced that the first homes on their new £60m and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the West Midlands city of Coventry have now gone live via UK ISP partner Vodafone. The aim is to cover “almost every home” in the city by the end of 2021.

The UK Government’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has released £1.725m to help improve “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage in rural parts of Suffolk. The money is expected to result in a further 550 business and 600 non-business (homes etc.) premises being covered.

UK ISP BT has launched a new range of special offers on their superfast (FTTC) and ultrafast (G.fast, FTTP) broadband packages, which among other things gives new customers a choice of taking either an included Samsung Tablet A 10.1 (worth £179), Fitbit Charge 3 (worth £129.99) or Amazon Echo (worth £89.99).

Cityfibre has today appointed a former partner at global investment firm Goldman Sachs, Simon Holden, to become its first Group Chief Operating Officer, reporting directly to the CEO, Greg Mesch. Holden will help the operator to roll-out their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the UK.

The Rural Services Network (RSN) are today leading calls for the UK government to produce an “urgent comprehensive strategy for rural areas” in preparation for Brexit, which among other things demands more investment to boost the “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband roll-out and stronger mobile coverage targets.

Business ISP RHM Telecommunications has joined the ITS Technology Group’s network platform, which among other things will give them access to the operator’s various wholesale multi-Gigabit capable “full fibre” services. RHM is understood to have a specific focus on tackling “connectivity blackspots” in Bristol and West London.
