The Welsh Government has quietly released some additional coverage data on the scale of their Phase 2 broadband roll-out contract with BT (Openreach), which is expected to provide 26,000 premises with access to “fast reliable broadband” (mostly ultrafast FTTP) by March 2021 at a cost of nearly £22.5m.

Openreach is to trial a special discount for their consumer friendly Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP tiers, which will enable providers in certain specific “Fibre First” exchange areas to offer free connections and cheaper rental so as to test or encourage migrations to “full fibre” lines.

The former CEO of Interoute (one of Europe’s largest fibre networks), Gareth Williams, has today been appointed as the CEO of rural FTTP broadband ISP Gigaclear. Meanwhile the company’s Interim Chief Executive, Mike Surrey, will remain with the business until the end of March to ensure an orderly handover.

City focused full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which already covers well over 500,000 UK premises, has launched a new promotion that slashes the cost of their top Gigabit tier (average speed of 900Mbps) to just £38 per month (plus a £19 one-off activation fee) for the first 12 months of service (£60 thereafter).

A new Portsmouth (Hampshire) based ISP called toob has surfaced that claims to have secured enough investment to deploy a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network “at scale” across parts of the UK, which aims to serve businesses and homes. But there’s a strong Vodafone connection.

The latest quarterly results from TalkTalk to the end of 2018 (Q3 FY19) has seen the ISP add a further +44,000 on-net broadband customers to total 4,287,000 (up from the +24k added in the previous quarter), although sadly there’s not much of an update on their “FibreNation” FTTH deployment.

The Liberal Democrat MP for South Lakes, Tim Farron, has given his support to rural ISP B4RN over the recent loss of their tax relief following changes to the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), which he warned could “undermine the good work of broadband pioneers” in such remote UK communities.

Cityfibre’s £40m project to roll-out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in Aberdeen (Scotland) has today seen its first customers go live via UK ISP partner Vodafone, which follows a little over half a year after the local construction phase began.

The UK Government has abandoned part of their £35m trial of 5G based mobile broadband and fibre optic technology on the Trans Pennine rail (train) route between Manchester and York, which is a joint effort between Network Rail, the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) and 5G Testbeds & Trials (5GTT) projects.

BT Group has released their results to the end of December 2018 (Q3 – 18/19 financial), which reports that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) UK ISP network has grown its coverage from 1.97m premises passed to 2.6m in the last quarter. Take-up of FTTP is 29.9% and G.fast just 0.88%.

A new report has revealed that 81% of global fixed broadband ISP subscriptions were fibre optic (FTTH/B/C) and cable (DOCSIS) based during Q3 2018, while the total number of connections increased by 25.4 million (+2.6%) in the quarter to deliver a milestone total of 1.008 Billion!

Lancashire-based rural ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) has announced that they intend to almost double their staff count by hiring a further 20 people. The additional hires will help to grow their community built and funded 1Gbps FTTH network to reach more homes in the English countryside.

Telecoms operator Openreach (BT) has today revealed the next batch of 11 areas that will benefit from their roll-out of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP infrastructure in 2019, which should cover 3 million UK homes and businesses by the end of 2020. Plus 3,000 extra engineers will be added.

A new ruling by HMRC, which appears to say that UK broadband ISPs acting as a Community Benefit Societies (CBS) to build their own local networks can no longer make use of tax breaks under the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), could have serious repercussions for “full fibre” projects in rural areas.

A new case study has offered an interesting insight into how ISP WightFibre has been able to reduce the costs of their £35m “Gigabit Island” project, which aims to roll-out a 1Gbps FTTP broadband network to cover 53,000 of the 61,000 homes on the Isle of Wight (South of Hampshire, England) by the end of 2021.
