The Government has today set out its first ever Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for UK mobile and broadband services, which requires Ofcom to reflect in their work the need to build “world-class digital infrastructure“, look at mobile roaming in rural areas and tackle the so-called “loyalty penalty” etc.

A new estimate has suggested that Open Fibre Networks (OFN – formerly IFNL), which deploys Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based ultrafast broadband ISP networks to new build home developments, has grown their network coverage to reach a little over 40,000 premises across the United Kingdom.

Rural focused UK ISP County Broadband, which last year secured £46m from Aviva Investors to help it deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 30,000 premises across the East of England, has recently updated a new website and prices for the full fibre service.

Telecoms operator Openreach (BT) has today begun trials of a “new” civil engineering technique called “Micro Ducting“, which in some areas could be used to speed up the roll-out of their new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology to UK homes and businesses.

Cityfibre has appointed infrastructure firm Amey to build their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the Scottish city of Edinburgh (UK ISP Vodafone will supply to consumers), which is expected to cost a little over £100 million and be largely complete by around the end of 2021.

The Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASELA), which consists of Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Essex County, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, has secured an investment of £4.5m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund to help build a new Gigabit broadband network.

The Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh Western, Alex Cole-Hamilton, has called for more co-ordination between “full fibre” broadband ISPs in the city because “residents … are at the end of their tether” due to repetitive roadworks being used to build the same type of optical fibre network several times over.

The Colchester Borough Council in Essex has today announced that they’ve secured a public investment boost of £3.45m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund, which will enable the market town to expand their existing “ultrafast broadband” network.

Next week’s meeting of the Executive Board for Leeds City Council in Yorkshire looks set to approve a procurement process for finding a partner to build and deliver a new “full fibre” network, which will aim to deliver Gigabit broadband speeds to public sector sites across the district. Homes and businesses may also benefit.

The Confederation of British Industry has warned that Brexit is “sucking the oxygen out of priorities” like deploying “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and 5G. Instead the business group wants the Government to “take practical steps this year” in order to close the Digital Divide between London and the rest of the UK.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has this morning announced the trial of a new 8Gbps+ (8000Mbps+) home broadband service via their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based network, which is a small scale test that will run for six months and take place with 50 homes in the large Cambridgeshire village of Papworth.
