The Balquhidder Community Broadband (CIC) project, which with support from UK ISP Bogons and the Stirling Council has begun building its own 1Gbps FTTP broadband network in a remote part of Scotland, has successfully won the Scottish Rural Action (SRA) Transport & Infrastructure Award for 2018.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has told ISPreview.co.uk that they still “plan to be at the heart of Britain’s full-fibre future” by deploying a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 3 million premises, which follows nearly a year of almost complete silence since the project was unveiled.

The UK telecoms regulator has today begun consulting on their new Business Connectivity Market Review 2018/19 (BCMR), which among other things is proposing “unrestricted access” to Openreach’s (BT) cable ducts / telegraph poles to boost fibre broadband. It will also try again to impose a Dark Fibre Access (DFA) product.

Congratulations are in order after “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband provider Hyperoptic scooped two big wins at the annual 2018 World Communications Awards last night, which saw the ISP secure top spots for both the “Broadband Pioneer” and “CEO of the Year” awards. The latter went to MD Dana Tobak.

BT Group has released their latest results to the end of September 2018 (Q2 – 18/19 financial), which reveals that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) G.fast network has reached 1290000 UK premises and FTTP covers 682,000 (13,000+ to “full fibre” per week). Plus there’s £712m to boost “fibre” cover.

City centric “full fibre” UK ISP Hyperoptic has announced that their on-going deployment of a 1Gbps capable broadband network is now expected to reach more than 160,000 social housing properties across the country, which represents a significant chunk of their overall FTTP/B roll-out.

The government has published an “interim response” to the National Infrastructure Commission’s assessment of the UK’s long-term infrastructure needs (here), which among other things called for nationwide coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2033 and for a ‘National Broadband Plan’ to be devised by Spring 2019.

The Government’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP, has today set out his autumn 2018 budget and confirmed that he will inject an “additional” £200m+ to help “full fibre” broadband ISP networks reach rural areas. He also set out policy proposals to encourage FTTP for new build homes and existing apartments.

The UK Government’s Chancellor, Philip Hammond, is reported to be planning another investment boost of at least £250 million to help further extend the availability of Gigabit capable “full fibre” broadband (FTTP / FTTH) links across more of the country. An announcement is expected on Monday as part of the Autumn Budget.

The UK Government’s Minister for Digital, Margot James MP, has praised ISP Community Fibre for having successfully made their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network available to 50% of social housing in the London borough of Wandsworth (the first of the city’s boroughs to do so).

Some 4,000 small businesses in South Wales and South West England could benefit after network builder Nextgenaccess secured an investment of £22m from the UK Government backed National Digital Infrastructure Fund (NDIF), which among bigger plans will also build a new 80km fibre optic link between Bristol and Newport.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they will drop the price of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband ISP network infrastructure by 75% for new homes in the UK (focus on smaller developers), which aims to “encourage house builders to provide all new homes with full fibre“.

The cries of “oh no, not another one!” can already be heard today as the Superfast Berkshire project in England joins others in confirming that their roll-out of fibre-based broadband ISP networks – via both Gigaclear and Openreach (BT) – will face a significant delay in the county (affecting both Phase 2 and 3 contracts).

The Scottish Government is consulting on changes to Section 130 of the New Road & Street Works Act 1991, which seeks to create a uniform technical standard for “narrow trenching“. This could encourage greater use of the technique by broadband network builders and better safeguards across Scotland’s 33 road authorities.

They’ve done it. Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has announced that their backers have agreed to establish a £2.5bn fund, which will help the operator extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network to cover 5 million premises in 37 UK cities and towns by 2025.

The Welsh Government has today announced that BT (Openreach) have won LOT 1 and LOT 3 of the new Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract, which will initially work to expand “fast broadband” (FTTP dominated) ISP network coverage to reach an additional 16,000 premises by the end of March 2021.
