The CEO of cable broadband ISP WightFibre, John Irvine, has issued a short update on their £35m project to deploy a new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 53,000 of the 61,000 homes on the Isle of Wight (Hampshire) by the end of 2022.

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has today refreshed their line-up of packages, not least by scrapping their old 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 200Mbps tiers in favour of an entry-level 30Mbps service and generally cheaper prices all the way of up their top 900Mbps FTTP home broadband plan. The installation fee is also now free.

Jeremy Chelot, CEO of London-based Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ISP Community Fibre, has told ISPreview.co.uk as part of our new interview that he wants to see a “full fibre” USO and is working toward an aspiration of covering more than 1 million UK premises with 10Gbps capable broadband by 2025.

A new report on local economic growth will next week warn Shropshire County Council in England of the “disappointing” news that their goal of providing all homes and businesses in the region with access to “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) by 2020 is “no longer likely [to] be achieved,” but it should get there eventually.

Ofcom has revealed that only BT (Openreach), KCOM, Hyperoptic, Quickline and Broadway Partners have expressed a formal interest in becoming suppliers for the new Universal Service Obligation (USO), which from 2020 will make it possible for anybody in a slow speed area to request a broadband speed of at least 10Mbps.

The UK Government has this week posted a brief update on their £200m national 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT) programme, which summarises all of their existing projects to test the future ultrafast wireless broadband technology and also hints at their plans for the next 12 months.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has appointed Elaine Doherty to be the City Development Manager for Edinburgh and Stirling in Scotland, which is due to benefit from a joint £110m project with UK ISP Vodafone to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network.

ISP Vodafone has today revealed how much UK consumers will need to pay in order to access their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based “Gigafast Broadband” network, which is initially being rolled out to cover 1 million homes in up to 12 of Cityfibre’s existing cities by the end of 2021.

Plucky rural ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which has spent the past 6 years deploying a 1Gbps capable community built and funded “full fibre” (FTTH) broadband network to remote homes in several counties across England, looks set to hit their 5,000 connections target by around the end of this month.

It’s two years since full fibre UK ISP Gigaclear announced that they could deploy their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to the rural village of Crazies Hill in Berkshire (here), which beat Openreach (BT) and Virgin Media to the punch. Sadly the local residents are still waiting.

After a period of uncertainty it’s today been revealed that Sky Broadband has done a new wholesale deal with Openreach (BT) to sell the operator’s range of “ultrafast broadband” (G.fast and FTTP) services on to UK customers, which will come at a hefty price discount of up to 40%. Sky now hope to double their customer base.

A team of documentary makers from the EU have published a lovely video that examines the excellent work being done by the Balquhidder Community Broadband project (CIC), which is currently rolling out a new 1Gbps FTTP broadband ISP network to serve all 197 premises in the remote rural Balquhidder area.

ISP Gigaclear, which is aiming to cover 350,000 rural UK premises with their Gigabit capable FTTP broadband network by the end of 2021 (currently 65,000 premises passed), has been ranked 23rd in the Tech Track’s 2018 league table of Britain’s 100 private tech companies with the fastest-growing sales over their latest 3 years.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has revealed how an additional £11.15m of funding, which was recently secured from the Government’s £75m Rural Broadband Infrastructure Scheme (RBIS), could boost “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage from the current target of 95% to 97%.

Cityfibre, which is rolling out a Dark Fibre and FTTP broadband ISP network across urban parts of the UK, has announced a new deal with Calix to deploy the “world’s only” Software Defined Access (SDA) operating system across its network. They claim it could help deliver 10Gbps to “every home,” maybe even 100Gbps.

Sparse rural communities and new build housing developments are two of the areas that councillors in Derbyshire are now recognising as problems for their on-going Digital Derbyshire (DD) project, which currently aims to ensure that 98% of local premises can access “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) by the end of 2018.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has suggested via a new survey that people are likely to get “faster internet on the beach in your favourite holiday resort” than when you are trying to connect in the UK, although the survey doesn’t actually confirm that and the results are a mix of questionable interpretations.
