Network builder Cityfibre and UK ISP MLL Telecom have opened up their new 24km long Gigabit fibre optic broadband and Ethernet infrastructure to local businesses in the city of Stirling (Scotland). The network has been live since last year (here) but initially it was only open to public sector sites (Public Service Network).

A new “independent” DotEcon study, which was commissioned by BT, has predicted that last year’s agreement to invest an additional £150m of state aid into improving the availability of “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) across Northern Ireland could result in economic, social and environmental benefits worth £1.2bn.

The BBC One consumer rights TV show, Rip Off Britain, looks set to take KCOM’s broadband and phone network in Hull (East Yorkshire) to task when it returns for a new series from 11th June 2018. The telecoms provider could face criticism of its prices, customer service and monopoly position in the local market.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today claimed to have won the first contract under the UK Government’s new £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund, which will see them working with West Sussex County Council to provide Gigabit FTTP broadband ISP connectivity to 9 urban areas within the council’s jurisdiction.

The Scottish Government‘s Rural Economy Secretary, Fergus Ewing, has pledged to quit if he fails to deliver on the new £600m R100 project, which aspires to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premise in Scotland” by the end of 2021 (here and here); March 2022 as a financial year.

London centric fibre optic ISP Community Fibre has dropped the prices of their Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) packages for new customers by 25% and now claim to be offering the “lowest priced symmetric broadband package in the UK,” although this is perhaps only valid for their slower tiers.

The Telford and Wrekin Council in Shropshire (England) and Openreach (BT) have announced the completion of their joint £5.6m rollout of FTTC based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) technology in the region, which can now cover 98% of local homes and businesses.

The co-founder and CEO of UK ISP Truespeed Communications, Evan Wienburg, has told ISPreview.co.uk – as part of our new interview – that their “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband network in South West England has already covered 3,000 rural premises and they aspire to hit 200,000 by 2025.

The £1.6bn+ state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK programme has published its final progress update for Q1 2018, which confirms that it has so far helped 4,852,808 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be put within reach of a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

Rural fibre optic UK ISP Gigaclear has announced that they’ve invested a further £6.2 million (£8m total so far) to expand their existing Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband network to reach more than 4,500 additional homes and businesses in West Kent (England) by the end of 2020.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today published their latest half year results to 31st March (FY 2018), which saw them add +109K new on-net broadband subscribers in the final quarter to total 4,139,000. We also got an update on their “full fibre” FTTH/P plans and they’re selling their direct B2B business to Daisy for £175m.

As expected BT’s consumer UK ISP division has today launched their new range of “Plus” FTTC, FTTP and G.fast based “fibre broadband“, phone and 4G bundles, which among other things means that if your fixed line goes down then the mobile data takes over and adopts “unlimited” usage.

The Government’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP, has this afternoon surprised and confused in equal measure by announcing that he wants to see the “majority” of UK homes and businesses being reached by Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband ISP networks by the end of 2025.

The official BT Wholesale Broadband Checker has received a small but interesting update and is now showing the operator’s top 1000Mbps download (220Mbps upload) tier for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which Openreach are busy rolling out to 3 million UK premises.

Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that they’ve begun the rollout of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology in Scotland’s capital city of Edinburgh. As part of that they’ve also invested £400,000 in a new “fibre training school” for the region that is based in Livingston.

The European Commission has publish their 2018 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2017 and 2018 to reveal the United Kingdom’s progress toward the EU’s Digital Agenda goals (e.g. NGA 30Mbps+ broadband for all by 2020). This year we remain ranked 7th out of 28 member states.

The Welsh Government has issued a progress update on their existing Superfast Cymru project with Openreach (BT), which suggests that BT has delivered a “significantly larger volume” of premises than either party anticipated at the outset but some areas are still causing problems.
