How fast is “ultrafast broadband” and should the Government help to deploy it? The latest online survey of 2,390 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 24.8% would commit £15bn+ of state aid to support its roll-out and 48.1% believe it should be defined via a speed of 1Gbps+ (Gigabit per second).

The joint State Aid fuelled Fastershire project for Gloucestershire and Herefordshire in England has announced that rural ISP Gigaclear is now the preferred bidder for the next £4.54m phase of their local broadband roll-out, which will benefit over 2,600 remote premises.

Urban fibre optic network developer Cityfibre has today announced that their Gigabit (1Gbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) Ethernet and broadband network will be rolled out to around 500 business parks across its footprint of 40 cities in the United Kingdom, which could benefit 22,000 SMEs.

Bad news for BT today. Ofcom confirms that it has been unable to reach a voluntary agreement over the future of Openreach and would now force the operator to adopt “legal separation“. A new UK framework for the next decade of telecoms and broadband regulation will now be established.

The publicly funded Aylesbury Vale Broadband project has this week started the next phase of expansion in rural Buckinghamshire (England), which will expand their 300Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network to the villages of Oving and Stewkley.

Communications provider MS3 has today begun the roll-out of their new “ultrafast” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) based broadband network in West Hull (East Yorkshire, England), which is supported by an initial investment of £500K and will cover a trial area of roughly 1,200 homes.

Liberty Global, which is parent to UK cable operator Virgin Media, has today launched a new initiative called GIGAWorld that will help to promote their plans for rolling out Gigabit capable broadband (1000Mbps+) to the 12 European countries in which it operates (most could be done by the end of 2018).

A new Vodafone commissioned study from Point Topic has predicted that only 6.5% of UK households can expect to be covered by Gigabit (1000Mbps+) capable FTTP/H fibre optic broadband cables by 2020, but other data from Point Topic forecasts a figure of 9.4% when business premises are included.

The Government has admitted that the United Kingdom is “falling behind on the roll out of full-fibre” (FTTP/H) ultrafast broadband and confirmed that tomorrows Autumn Statement will aim to rectify that via a new £1bn Digital Infrastructure Fund, which should help 2 million extra homes get access.

The Managing Director and Founder of broadband ISP Call Flow Solutions, Andy Conibere, has told ISPreview.co.uk that the future could be “very bright“, provided regulation is introduced to protect alternative networks from being “unfairly squeezed out by the dominant suppliers” (BT, Virgin Media etc.).

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme has posted its latest progress update to 30th September 2016, which reveals that some 4,168,739 additional premises in the United Kingdom can now access a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of a £1.6bn public investment.

Earlier this year Hyperoptic announced that they’d be extending their 1000Mbps (1Gbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise / Building (FTTP/B) based ultrafast broadband network to 7 extra “hyper-cities” in the UK (here) and today the first buildings have now started to go live in Edinburgh (Scotland).

TalkTalk has published their latest interim results for the 6 months to 30th September 2016 (H1 2017), which saw them lose fewer on-net broadband customers (-29,000) in the period to total 3,967,000 and 21% of those (779K) take their FTTC “fibre broadband” products (with 2,500 on FTTP in York).

The Superfast Essex project in England, which is working with Openreach (BT) and Gigaclear to roll-out “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) networks to 95% of the county by 2019, yesterday put out a new tender for their future Phase 3 roll-out that will aim to push coverage to 97% by 2020.

Fibre optic ISP TrueSpeed has hinted to Ofcom that its 150Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network, which is currently rolling out to parts of the Chew Valley in rural North East Somerset (England), could also be expanded into Devon, Wiltshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.
