Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that their 300Mbps capable “fibre optic” broadband and TV network will be expanded to reach an additional 20,000 homes and businesses in the UK city of York, which is where Cityfibre, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk have also been deploying 940Mbps FTTP.

Openreach (BT) and Huawei have today claimed to be the “first companies in Europe” to trial three new ultrafast fibre optic broadband technologies, including 40Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable NG-PON2, 10Gbps XGS-PON and 2.5Gbps GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) over a single fibre.

A new report from Ovum, which was jointly commissioned by BT and Australia’s nbn, has forecast that some 29 million subscribers will be using a G.fast based ultrafast broadband connection by 2021 (3% of the global fixed broadband market) and most of those will be in Western Europe.

The West Sussex County Council has proposed a new “Gigabit West Sussex” framework that will shortly start seeking suppliers to help it “bring ultrafast [FTTP/H broadband] to as many parts of the County as possible,” starting with a contract to deploy a new Dark Fibre network in Adur & Worthing.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project has released its latest Q2 2016 take-up data for the state aid supported roll-out of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which shows that many local authorities are seeing 30% adoption of the new service and that will help reinvestment.

A new BT commissioned report from Analysys Mason has perhaps unsurprisingly warned that Ofcom’s effort to encourage alternative network (AltNet) ISPs to build rival ultrafast broadband networks, such as by opening up access to Openreach’s cable ducts, may fail to achieve the desired result.

BT has said that the Government can avoid imposing a tricky industry levy on ISPs or using public funding to help pay for the proposed 10Mbps broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO) because they’ll take the full responsibility, as well as pushing superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 97-98% of the UK.

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has confirmed that an additional 360,000 homes and businesses in Scotland are set to benefit from their on-going £3bn Project Lightning network expansion by 2019. Elsewhere 19,000 have separately been confirmed for the roll-out in Cambridgeshire (England).

Rural ISP Gigaclear has confirmed that their State Aid supported Fastershire Phase 2 roll-out of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband in Gloucestershire, which is focused upon the Cotswolds area, has now reached the half-way point with 3,000 premises passed.

Openreach (BT) will today make a small update to their ‘When can I get fibre?‘ broadband coverage checker, which should offer a bit of extra detail about the availability of “ultrafast” 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) technology. But the change will only work for locations in Wales.

In an interesting move Openreach (BT) has decided to slash the distance based cost of their troubled Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) based Fibre-on-Demand (FoD / FTTPoD) product, albeit only for “slow speed areas” where their FTTC (VDSL2) technology fails to deliver above 10Mbps.
