The £40 million Better Broadband to Suffolk project, which is working to make BT’s superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to more than 85% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015, has joined other regions in seeking fresh Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funding to reach more premises.

The tiny Fell End Broadband project in Ravenstonedale (Cumbria, England) has this week begun deployment of a new fibre optic cable that will be used to connect 58 local premises (these are spread out over an 11km area) to super-fast Internet connectivity.

KC (KCOM Group), which serves Hull and some other parts of East Yorkshire in England with broadband and phone services, has revealed that their superfast fibre optic (FTTP and FTTC) based Lightstream Internet service has now passed 24,700 premises and 5,900 customers have subscribed.

The £14.57m CSW Broadband partnership of 8 local authorities, which aims to ensure that BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network is made available to 92% of Coventry, 96% of Solihull and 91% of Warwickshire in England (overall 91% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) by spring 2016, has been expanded by +6,480 additional premises.

The Hull-based incumbent telecoms provider KC, which covers part of East Yorkshire in England, has advised the UK Government to ignore an “unambitious” new study by the Broadband Stakeholder Group after it suggested that a “median household” might only require bandwidth of 19Mbps (Megabits per second) by 2023.

BT Group’s latest Q3-2013 (calendar) results reveal that the operators consumer and business ISP divisions have grown their fixed line broadband subscriber base by +156k in the quarter to total 6.961m (up from +95k added in Q2 and +136k in Q1), which includes 1.7m superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +195k in Q3 vs +197k added in Q2).

CityFibre has announced that it will invest up to £30 million in order to roll-out an independent ultrafast metro fibre optic broadband and telecoms network around the city of Peterborough in the East of England. The project follows similar deployments in both York and Bournemouth.

The latest information on coverage of true fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) connections in the United Kingdom suggests that the market hasn’t moved much since the end of 2012. The latest count for June 2013 records a total of 186,500 premises have now been passed by the ultrafast (100Mbps+) connection method.
