Over the next few years it’s likely that you’ll soon start to hear more about a next generation broadband ISP technology called Fibre to the Distribution Point (FTTdp), which Ofcom are currently encouraging BT to trial. But what is FTTdp and will it really help UK homes and businesses to get ultrafast internet connections? Let’s take a look.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which covers 34 countries that claim to support democracy and a market economy, has reported that the United Kingdom experienced an annual growth rate of 172% for true fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) ISP connections.

The Rutland County Council (RCC) in England has today confirmed that the first community (village) to get access to BT’s new superfast broadband (FTTC/P) service through its publicly funded £3 million Digital Rutland project is North Luffenham.

The government’s Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, has confirmed that two thirds of the projects that were initially designed to help deliver superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services to 90% of the United Kingdom by 2015 are now underway and the remaining 15 contracts should be “agreed shortly“.

The Dorset County Council (DCC) in central southern England has today signed a new state-aid supported £31.75 million deal with BT to expand its fibre optic based (FTTC/P) broadband ISP services to cover 97% of the region within the next three and a half years (i.e. late 2017).

The consumer division of BT has confirmed that it will shortly launch a new BTInfinity 300 ultrafast broadband package using Openreach’s fastest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) product, which will offer download speeds of up to 300Mbps (20Mbps uploads) from £50 a month.

The government of Scotland has today signed a state aid supported £264 million deal with BT that will make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services available to 85% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015 and around 95% by the end of 2017. As before we don’t know what proportion of those will get “superfast” (25Mbps+) speeds.

Alcatel-Lucent has posted some tantalising details from its recent trial of future G.Fast and prototype Vectoring 2.0 technology at Telekom Austria, which could one day push today’s up to 80Mbps capable FTTC (VDSL2) broadband ISP lines to deliver speeds of up to 1100Mbps (1.1Gbps).

The Co-Founder and CTO of UK ISP Timico, Trefor Davies, has called for “government intervention” to split off the “rural bits” of BTOpenreach’s network (BT can keep the urban bits that compete with Virgin Media) and to help rollout a truly national ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP) service to every home and business.

The latest map from Point Topic has revealed that uptake of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) based internet connections in the United Kingdom has now reached 20% (Q1-2013), which is largely thanks to Virgin Media’s effort to double its customers speeds and thus lift several million consumers into the same area of performance.

The national UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a new consultation that proposes to boost competition for superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) services by cutting the wholesale cost of switching between ISPs on BT’s network to £10-£15 and slashing contract lengths for migrations to just 1 month. BTOpenreach will also face stiffer rules.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national UK telecoms network, has revealed that 2.7 Million apartments (Multi Dwelling Units) or high rise buildings around the United Kingdom can now access its superfast broadband service (i.e. up to 80Mbps FTTC or 330Mbps capable FTTP). But 550k more will soon follow.

The governments notoriously complicated and confusing Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which is responsible for taxing the rateable value of the basic infrastructure, has hinted that its next rate card update in 2015 could reduce the tax on rural fibre optic broadband lines for smaller (altnet) ISPs. Sadly there’s a big catch.

The North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire Councils have today signed a new state aid supported £5.7 million contract that will see BT expand the reach of its “high-speed fibre” broadband (FTTC/P) connectivity to cover 89% of local homes and businesses by the end of Spring 2015. But how many of the 89% will be “superfast” (25Mbps+)?

The £94 million state aid supported joint Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project to make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services available to “around” 90% of local premises by the end of 2016 (original news) has today confirmed the first towns and villages to be upgraded.

South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and Wiltshire Council (WC) in England have today revealed which areas will be the first to benefit from their £35.6m contract with BT to roll-out superfast fibre broadband based connectivity to 95% of local premises by the end of March 2016.
