Alternative network operator and UK ISP Highland Broadband (formerly Lothian Broadband), which is deploying a 10Gbp capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of the Scottish Highlands, has today announced that they’ve secured a £50m funding boost to help support a “major expansion” of their network “throughout rural Scotland“.

Internet provider YouFibre, which is the primary retail ISP outlet for Netomnia’s (Brsk) 8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, has today announced that the latest Wi-Fi 7 tech will now be included as standard across all residential and business broadband packages “at no extra cost” – making it one of the first among major providers to do so.

Mobile network operator and home broadband ISP EE (BT) is reportedly preparing to launch a second Wi-Fi 7 powered router “later this year“, which is intended to complement their existing Smart Hub Pro router (inc. Smart WiFi Pro mesh kit) that is sold alongside their fastest 1.6Gbps FTTP packages on Openreach’s network.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has joined with a number of major new partners, including Arcadis, Thames Water, Cadent, Affinity Water and Lightsonic, to trial a couple of different approaches for detecting mains water and gas leaks, which cleverly works by harnessing the operator’s existing fibre optic broadband network.

Network operator TfW Ffeibr (TFW Fibre), which is an arm’s-length initiative setup by Transport for Wales (TfW) and thus the Welsh Government, has today announced the delivered of its “first commercial fibre connectivity contract” with Cloud Centres Networks for the fibre that runs alongside local railways.

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) in England has proposed to wind-up the NYNet 100 company, which was originally created to help carry out procurement and contract management for the local authority’s Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project. London-focused ISP Vorboss, which runs a 100Gbps speed fibre optic network in the UK’s capital city, has told Ofcom that reclassifying the UK’s market for high capacity leased lines to include “LeasedLine Equivalents” (LLEs), such as XGS-PON technology (underpins many FTTP broadband networks), would be “misguided, confusing, and ultimately detrimental“.

Network operator Openreach has today revealed that their engineers, alongside those of other alternative networks, are now resuming efforts to both maintain their existing network in the village of Bramley (Surrey) and to deploy new full fibre broadband (FTTP) infrastructure. Much of this was stopped a few years ago after the seriousness of a local petrol leak became clear.

Glasgow-based full fibre broadband ISP Brillband, which was acquired by AllPoints Fibre Networks (APFN) back in October 2024 (here), has today announced that they’ve successfully placed their first orders via APFN’s new aquila wholesale platform – this aggregates fibre (FTTP) networks from several operators to help retail providers expand their coverage.

Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet has today announced that ITS Technology‘s business-focused UK full fibre network is now live on their Fibre Hub, which forms part of their recently agreed partnership (here) and essentially aggregates access to a number of full fibre broadband networks for partner providers. But that’s not the only development that Zen has announced.

UK ISP Plusnet has refreshed the discounts they offer across their home broadband plans for new customers, which for example has cut the monthly price of their top 900Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package to just £36.99 per month on a 24-month term (mid-contract price hikes apply). Some packages also now include reward cards worth up to £100.

But its future remains uncertain.
