As expected BT has confirmed that their first large-scale (2,000 premises) live customer trial of future G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), which will initially offer Internet speeds of up to 330Mbps (rising to 500Mbps in the future), have begun in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire).

BTOpenreach appears to have expanded their pilots of ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable VDSL2 based Fibre-to-the-Basement (FTTB) and Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN) broadband technology to parts of Gatwick airport (West Sussex) and Rotherhithe (London), respectively.

BTOpenreach has told ISPreview.co.uk that the first large-scale residential trial of their future G.fast broadband technology (details), which the telecoms operator expects to sell via the Next Generation Access 2 (NGA2) tag, will begin next month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and ISPs are now being invited.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has today launched a “major drive” to boost broadband connectivity in the capital, although it’s mostly the same stuff as we saw being announced last year. At least there’s now a map to depict just how bad the situation is, especially in the city centre.

The CTO of BT’s Wholesale division, Colin Bannon, has revealed that their future G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology has also been tested on longer copper lines of 350 metres and the operator found that at this distance it was still able to deliver Internet speeds of 300Mbps.

One and a half years ago BT made a £50 million commitment to expand the commercial roll-out of superfast capable “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to 400,000 additional premises in 30 UK cities. Since then the operator has remained largely silent and questions are now growing over the projects status.

In this guest editorial Nicholas Hardiman, an IT consultant who has worked with Internet and Enterprise technologies since the 1990s, interviews Openreach’s (BT) Senior Project Manager, Steve Jones, about the work being done to bring faster “fibre broadband” connectivity to many thousands of new homes and businesses in Wales.

BT has confirmed that 100 businesses in the city of Swansea (Wales) will benefit when they begin their technically-focused trial of 500Mbps capable G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology in the area this summer.

20th April, 2015 (26 Comments)

Earlier this year BT announced a decade long deployment plan for their next generation G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology (details), which will begin in 2016/17 and should eventually make download speeds of ‘up to’ 500Mbps available to “most homes” across the United Kingdom.

Israel-based semiconductor company Sckipio has suggested that BT’s future deployment of G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband (here), which from 2016/17 aims to make speeds of 500Mbps available to “most homes“, could be fuelled in urban areas by millimeter Wave (mmW) wireless technology connected to distribution points (i.e. instead of fibre optic cable).

9th February, 2015 (14 Comments)

After a small delay some 16 premises in the tiny North Yorkshire village of Ulshaw have become the first in Northern England to get access to superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds thanks to BT’s trial of a new broadband technology called Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN). Now if they could just get the power supply issues fixed.

5th February, 2015 (14 Comments)

Israel-based semiconductor company Sckipio, which last year became the first manufacturer to release commercial hardware for the next generation hybrid-fibre G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology that BT is also hoping to roll-out in the United Kingdom from 2016/17 (details), claims to have already doubled the technology’s reach.

The Commons Select Committee for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has today published the results of their inquiry into the roll-out of faster broadband Internet access to rural areas, which among other things calls for the current Universal Service Commitment (USC) speed of at least 2Mbps (Megabits) to be increased to 10Mbps.

30th January, 2015 (95 Comments)

The national telecoms operator, BT, has today delivered an earlier than expected surprise by announcing their intention to deploy the next generation hybrid-fibre G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology across the United Kingdom from 2016/17, with “most homes” told to expect speeds of ‘up to’ 500Mbps (Megabits per second) and there’s also a “premium” option for up to 1000Mbps (the premium may come via FTTP).

27th January, 2015 (1 Comment)

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme is increasingly starting to tackle the historic curse of BTOpenreach’s pure copper Exchange Only Lines (EOL) and the latest example of this comes from several remote rural villages in the English county of Warwickshire.

The Westminster City Council in central London has added its voice to the growing calls for local businesses to be given access to better broadband connectivity, which comes after it was earlier revealed by Ofcom that only 47% of the city’s premises have access to “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) speeds.

22nd December, 2014 (10 Comments)

BT has today confused fibre optic connection terminologies a little by detailing their first pilot for a “new form” of Fibre-to-the-Basement / Building (FTTB) broadband technology in the City of London area, which uses VDSL2 over copper like FTTC but is optimised for basements / comms rooms where the operator has a wayleave/permission from the landlord and access to power.
