The Light at the End of Shropshire’s BDUK Broadband Funding Woes

A new report from the Shropshire County Council (SCC), which examines the various options available for providing “fibre broadband” to those areas that aren’t currently projected to received it, has shown that the local authority is still struggling to match the Government’s £11.38m Phase 2 Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funding.

Hyperoptic Study of EU City Broadband Speeds Criticises Slow London UK

Fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which typically focuses its deployments of 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB/H) technology on big UK cities, has published a new index today that ranks European capital cities by broadband speed. The report criticises London for ranking a low 26 out of 33 cities and notes how the city has also fallen four places over the last 5 years.

Next Gen 1Gbps G.Fast Copper Broadband Standard Gains Final Approval

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) has now given its final approval to the next generation G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband standard, which in a few short years could replace BTOpenreach’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps FTTC service and potentially deliver up to around ten times the speed using similar hybrid fibre lines (mixed fibre optic and shorter copper).

North Yorkshire’s UK BT Fibre Broadband and FTTrN Rollout Suffers Delay

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England, which was supposed to be rolling out BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to 90% of local premises by the end of October 2014 and possibly reaching 100% by the end of 2017, is apparently running “13 weeks behind schedule” and BT’s plan to deploy its new Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN) technology in the county may also have to wait another year.

Gigabit Copper Broadband One Step Closer as Sckipio Outs First G.fast Kit

Israel-based Sckipio appears to have become one of the world’s first manufacturers to produce hardware that is fully compliant with the ITU-T’s G.fast recommendation (G.9700/1), a technology that BT recently demonstrated as having the capability to deliver broadband speeds of up to almost 1000Mbps via existing copper telephone lines.

Earlier this month ISPreview.co.uk became the first to reveal some of the results from BT’s first field trial of hybrid-fibre G.fast (ITU G.9701) and FTTdp broadband technology (here) and today the operator, perhaps seizing on recent calls from UK Labour Party activists, delivered its own take describing the service as “very promising … with significant potential” for the future.

First BT Trial of Future G.Fast Copper Broadband Hits Nearly 720Mbps

The next generation of hybrid-fibre G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) and FTTdp broadband technology managed to achieve an aggregate downstream / upstream speed of nearly 720Mbps (Megabits per second) during BTOpenreach’s first UK trial with Huawei, which took place at several homes near the operators Adastral Park engineering HQ in Ipswich (England).

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that its first trial of BT’s new superfast Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN) broadband technology, which has the potential to deliver much faster and more stable speeds than the traditional Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service, is now being implemented and will be “ready to accept customer orders” in late 2014.

BT has today published their latest Q2-2014 (calendar) results and confirmed that its retail broadband base suffered a slowing of growth (+104k in Q2 vs +170k in Q1-2014) to total 7,385,000 customers. The operator has also revealed a new trial of superfast broadband FTTrn technology in London and confirmed that its FTTC network now reaches 20 million UK homes and businesses (premises passed).
