BT Says 100 Businesses to Join Swansea 500Mb G.fast Broadband Trial

BT has confirmed that 100 businesses in the city of Swansea (Wales) will benefit when they begin their technically-focused trial of 500Mbps capable G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology in the area this summer.

The national UK telecoms operator, BT, has today published the latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar) and confirmed that their retail business added +121,000 new broadband subscribers in the quarter (up from +119k in Q4 2014) to total 7,713,000, which includes 3,010,000 on BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +266k vs +209k in Q4 2014).

Earlier this year BT announced a decade long deployment plan for their next generation G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology (details), which will begin in 2016/17 and should eventually make download speeds of ‘up to’ 500Mbps available to “most homes” across the United Kingdom.

Europe Moots Future Ultrafast Broadband Speed Targets for Post 2020

The European Commission’s new Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Günther Oettinger, has for the first time started to discuss what targets we should aim for after the current Digital Agenda programme completes and hopefully delivers “superfast” broadband speeds of 30Mbps+ to all by 2020; with 50% also subscribed to a 100Mbps+ service.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sign Extended Fibre Broadband Contract

The Connecting Cambridgeshire project, which is currently working with BT to make superfast broadband speeds available to 90% of premises in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (England) by the end of 2015, has signed an extended Broadband Delivery UK contract that should push the coverage up to around 95% by the end of 2017.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne MP, has today set out the Government’s annual Budget 2015 report for the United Kingdom. Israel-based semiconductor company Sckipio has suggested that BT’s future deployment of G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband (here), which from 2016/17 aims to make speeds of 500Mbps available to “most homes“, could be fuelled in urban areas by millimeter Wave (mmW) wireless technology connected to distribution points (i.e. instead of fibre optic cable).
