The Broadband Forum has produced a new technical specification (TR-301) that appears to lay the groundwork for future deployments of VDSL2 (FTTC) and G.fast based broadband technologies that suck the power they need directly from home users (your electricity bill might take a hit).

Hands up how many of you still make regular use of your fixed line phone to make calls? Probably not many. In that sense the news that BT are pushing Ofcom to relax their regulation so they can close their traditional phone network and move customers to a new Internet-based system will not come as a shock.

The CTO of BT’s Wholesale division, Colin Bannon, has revealed that their future G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology has also been tested on longer copper lines of 350 metres and the operator found that at this distance it was still able to deliver Internet speeds of 300Mbps.

Telecoms operators that upgrade from their old fixed line copper based broadband (e.g. ADSL) services to a pure fibre optic (e.g. FTTH/P etc.) style network infrastructure could make significantly bigger maintenance, energy and reliability savings than initially predicted.
