BT Fights Back – Calls for Ofcom Regulatory Changes to Boost Broadband

Telecoms giant BT has today set out the regulatory changes that it believes would help consumers and businesses in the United Kingdom to enjoy the “best possible” outcomes, such as faster broadband services, while also attempting to fend off rivals that would rather Ofcom broken the operator up.

Standalone Naked FTTC “Fibre Broadband” Unlikely to Launch Until 2017

A recent update from BTWholesale suggests that the newly proposed SoGEA (Naked VDSL) product, which would give you the ability to order a standalone superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) line without also having to pay a separate fee for the phone service, might not see a commercial launch until late 2017.

Analyst firm IDATE recently updated its World FTTx Database, which provides for an interesting snapshot of the different fixed line technologies that countries around the world are using for “superfast broadband“. Suffice to say that Europe and the UK love hybrid-fibre (VDSL / FTTC).

As predicted yesterday BT has today announced a new roll-out plan for delivering faster broadband (at least 5-10Mbps) connections to the hardest to reach final 5% of premises in the United Kingdom (mostly rural homes) and an aim to push “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps G.fast to 10 million premises.

At the end of last month BTOpenreach began connecting customers to their large-scale 6-9 month trial of 500Mbps capable NGA2 G.fast broadband technology and 1Gbps Fibre-on-Demand (FOD2) in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire). Now we have the first official progress update.

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) in Taiwan has this week officially begun the world’s first commercial deployment of next generation G.fast broadband technology, which is the same service that BT are currently trialling (here) for launch in the UK during 2016/17.

SMEs to See Median Broadband Speed Demand of Just 8.1Mbps by 2025

The Broadband Stakeholders Group, which advises the Government on broadband matters, has published a new report that aims to predict the future requirements of small UK businesses (SMEs). The conclusion finds that SMEs will see median downstream demand rise from 5Mbps in 2015 to just 8.1Mbps by 2025, but the overall picture is more complex.

First Customers Live on BT 500Mbps G.fast Broadband Trial in Huntingdon

As expected BT has confirmed that their first large-scale (2,000 premises) live customer trial of future G.fast broadband technology (ITU G.9701), which will initially offer Internet speeds of up to 330Mbps (rising to 500Mbps in the future), have begun in the market town of Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire).

ISP Zen Internet Joins UK Ultrafast G.fast and 1Gbps FoD2 Broadband Trial

Last month BTOpenreach began inviting ISPs to join the first large-scale customer trial of next generation 500Mbps capable G.fast and 1Gbps FTTP-on-Demand broadband technology, which is starting this month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire). Zen Internet has now become the first to confirm their participation (8 ISPs are involved).

BT Reach 7.8M Broadband Customers and 80 Percent UK Fibre FTTC Cover

BT has released the latest results for Q2-2015 (calendar) and confirmed that their retail business added +85K new broadband subscribers in the quarter (down sharply from +121K in Q1) to total 7,798,000, which includes 3,226,000 on BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +217K vs +266K in Q1). Incidentally FTTC/P is now available to 23 million premises (80% of the UK).

BTOpenreach has told ISPreview.co.uk that the first large-scale residential trial of their future G.fast broadband technology (details), which the telecoms operator expects to sell via the Next Generation Access 2 (NGA2) tag, will begin next month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and ISPs are now being invited.

BT Wants to Scrap Traditional UK Phone Services Within 10 Years

In that sense the news that BT are pushing Ofcom to relax their regulation so they can close their traditional phone network and move customers to a new Internet-based system will not come as a shock.

BT Claims Future G.fast Broadband Delivers 300Mbps Speeds at 350 Metres

The CTO of BT’s Wholesale division, Colin Bannon, has revealed that their future G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology has also been tested on longer copper lines of 350 metres and the operator found that at this distance it was still able to deliver Internet speeds of 300Mbps.
