The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) has now given its final approval to the next generation G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband standard, which in a few short years could replace BTOpenreach’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps FTTC service and potentially deliver up to around ten times the speed using similar hybrid fibre lines (mixed fibre optic and shorter copper).

In its final report the RSA’s City Growth Commission, which has been looking at ways of boosting the United Kingdom’s long-term economic prospects, has today recommended that the Government attempt to “emulate” Singapore by aiming for ultrafast broadband speeds of 1Gbps [1000 Megabits] “in the near future” across our cities.

Austrian ISP A1 Telekom (Telekom Austria Group) and Alcatel-Lucent claim to have connected the first customer in the world to a domestic copper telecoms network using G.fast (ITU G.9700/1) technology, which some predict could eventually replace BT’s up to 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service in the United Kingdom.

Israel-based Sckipio appears to have become one of the world’s first manufacturers to produce hardware that is fully compliant with the ITU-T’s G.fast recommendation (G.9700/1), a technology that BT recently demonstrated as having the capability to deliver broadband speeds of up to almost 1000Mbps via existing copper telephone lines.

Earlier this month ISPreview.co.uk became the first to reveal some of the results from BT’s first field trial of hybrid-fibre G.fast (ITU G.9701) and FTTdp broadband technology (here) and today the operator, perhaps seizing on recent calls from UK Labour Party activists, delivered its own take describing the service as “very promising … with significant potential” for the future.

The next generation of hybrid-fibre G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) and FTTdp broadband technology managed to achieve an aggregate downstream / upstream speed of nearly 720Mbps (Megabits per second) during BTOpenreach’s first UK trial with Huawei, which took place at several homes near the operators Adastral Park engineering HQ in Ipswich (England).

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that its first trial of BT’s new superfast Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTrN) broadband technology, which has the potential to deliver much faster and more stable speeds than the traditional Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service, is now being implemented and will be “ready to accept customer orders” in late 2014.

BT has today published their latest Q2-2014 (calendar) results and confirmed that its retail broadband base suffered a slowing of growth (+104k in Q2 vs +170k in Q1-2014) to total 7,385,000 customers. The operator has also revealed a new trial of superfast broadband FTTrn technology in London and confirmed that its FTTC network now reaches 20 million UK homes and businesses (premises passed).

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’re currently lab testing the next generation DOCSIS 3.1 cable network standard, which could one day be used to deliver broadband download speeds of up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) and uploads of 1Gbps+ over their predominantly urban network.

Telecom giant Alcatel-Lucent appears, perhaps to the dismay of fibre optic campaigners, to have given the traditional copper telephone line a new lease of life after its Bell Labs research division claimed to set a new world record by delivering “ultra-broadband” speeds of 10,000Mbps (Megabits per second) over the aging infrastructure using a prototype technology called XG-FAST (G.fast2?).

According to ComReg, the Irish telecoms regulator, 43% of fixed broadband customers in Ireland receive sub-10Mbps speeds. But all that could change after Vodafone teamed up in a 50:50 Joint Venture with state-owned electricity firm ESB to splash €450m (£358m) on a nationwide roll-out of 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) technology. We can only hope they do the same here.

A new report from Arthur D.Little and Exane BNP Paribas, which examines the Capital Expenditure (Capex) of European telecoms operators, has warned that incumbent providers will face a growing divide versus cable and pure fibre optic (FTTH/P) ISPs because the cheaper and slower hybrid-cheap (FTTC) approach is “not future-proof“.

BTOpenreach has decided to extend their on-going trials of VDSL Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5) technology into a second phase, which could improve the speeds delivered via BT’s existing “up to” 80Mbps hybrid-fibre (FTTC) superfast broadband network by helping to eliminate interference (crosstalk). But it might also push any future roll-out back to late 2014 or 2015.

The CEO of the Broadband Forum, Robin Mersh, has said that critics who claim the future G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) broadband technology is “just another DSL” solution are “way off the mark“. According to Mersh, G.fast is a “giant step away from DSL” that will deliver download speeds from “300 to 800 Mbps” via a fast and cost-effective deployment.

Israel-based modem maker Sckipio has predicted that pressure from rival cable platforms could push telecoms operators like BT in the UK to begin rolling out next gen G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) broadband technology, which might deliver speeds of up to 1000Mbps over some hybrid fibre optic and copper lines, much sooner than expected.
