Europe Moots Future Ultrafast Broadband Speed Targets for Post 2020

The European Commission’s new Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Günther Oettinger, has for the first time started to discuss what targets we should aim for after the current Digital Agenda programme completes and hopefully delivers “superfast” broadband speeds of 30Mbps+ to all by 2020; with 50% also subscribed to a 100Mbps+ service.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sign Extended Fibre Broadband Contract

The Connecting Cambridgeshire project, which is currently working with BT to make superfast broadband speeds available to 90% of premises in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (England) by the end of 2015, has signed an extended Broadband Delivery UK contract that should push the coverage up to around 95% by the end of 2017.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne MP, has today set out the Government’s annual Budget 2015 report for the United Kingdom. Unlike past budgets this one is different because it comes immediately before a General Election and that usually means big promises, such as pledging 100Mbps “ultra-fast” broadband to “nearly all the homes in the country” and a possible 5Mbps+ USO.

Sckipio Want to Supply Urban G.fast Broadband Using Wireless Tech

Israel-based semiconductor company Sckipio has suggested that BT’s future deployment of G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband (here), which from 2016/17 aims to make speeds of 500Mbps available to “most homes“, could be fuelled in urban areas by millimeter Wave (mmW) wireless technology connected to distribution points (i.e. instead of fibre optic cable).

Communications provider Entanet has said that there is still a market for BTOpenreach’s ultrafast native Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband in the United Kingdom, although its appeal remains in a “relatively small niche market” and is held back by limited availability.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today announced a massive £3bn expansion (called “Project Lightning“) of their existing 152Mbps capable cable broadband, TV and phone network, which will extend the reach of their fixed line services to an additional 4 million homes and businesses (total of 17 million) by 2020, as a nervous BT looks on.

BT has today published its latest results for Q4-2014 (calendar), which revealed that their retail division had added +119,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 7,592,000 (up from the +88k added in Q3 and the +104k in Q2). Meanwhile almost 22 million UK premises can now access the operators “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC/P) network.

RSA Says “No Reason” UK Cities Should Not Aim for 1Gbps Broadband
