Cable operator Virgin Media often wins awards for being the fastest national consumer broadband provider, at least in terms of average download speed, but this overlooks the contribution of considerably faster services from smaller ISPs that are frequently shunned. We take a closer look at the real-world performance of these providers.

The CEO of the Broadband Forum, Robin Mersh, has said that critics who claim the future G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) broadband technology is “just another DSL” solution are “way off the mark“. According to Mersh, G.fast is a “giant step away from DSL” that will deliver download speeds from “300 to 800 Mbps” via a fast and cost-effective deployment.

Israel-based modem maker Sckipio has predicted that pressure from rival cable platforms could push telecoms operators like BT in the UK to begin rolling out next gen G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) broadband technology, which might deliver speeds of up to 1000Mbps over some hybrid fibre optic and copper lines, much sooner than expected.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England, which last week touted extra funding to help reach their 100% coverage target for BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network (here), now looks set to become the first UK county to trial the operators latest Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node (FTTRN) technology for even faster speeds.

The FTTH Council Europe, which campaigns for the widespread adoption of true Fibre-to-the-Home (100Mbps+) broadband ISP connections, has published its latest annual table of global FTTH coverage and revealed that growth in the United Kingdom has slowed and continues to offer less than 1% penetration (234k premises passed at 10.3% uptake).

The accounts manager for business ISP Fluidata, Andi Soric, has observed how one of the quickest ways to encourage BT into deploying a true fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network is for rivals to foster competition at infrastructure level by doing the same thing first.

The Government has today called for feedback on their plans to develop a future digital communications infrastructure strategy, which aims to design a long-term plan for building even faster broadband networks, supporting the roll-out of IPv6 Internet addresses and developing 5G based Mobile Broadband technology etc.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) Study Group 15 has given its formal “consent” to the start of the final approval process for the next generation G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) broadband standard, which could one day deliver speeds of up to 1000Mbps (1Gbps) over some BT hybrid fibre (mixed copper and fibre optic) lines.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has slashed its prediction, which originally forecast that the United Kingdom would be home to just under 26m broadband lines at the end of 2016, by “almost” 8% to 23.88m due to the strain on disposable incomes and delays to the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) deployment of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) network.

A group of radio amateurs have warned that the next generation G.fast (ITU G.9700 / aka – FTTC2) broadband technology, which BT and Huawei plan to “field trial” in the UK alongside Fibre-to-the-Distribution-Point (FTTdp) lines for potential speeds of up to around 1000Mbps (here), could cause significant interference for them.

The Hull-based incumbent telecoms provider KC, which covers part of East Yorkshire in England, has advised the UK Government to ignore an “unambitious” new study by the Broadband Stakeholder Group after it suggested that a “median household” might only require bandwidth of 19Mbps (Megabits per second) by 2023.

Global telecoms giant Alcatel-Lucent has developed a new solution – Micro-Nodes – that could bring broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps or faster to homes using existing FTTC (VDSL2) or G.Fast technology and by adopting a cheaper approach to the Fibre-to-the-Distribution-Point (FTTdp) method.

BT Group has quietly confirmed that it plans to trial the next generation G.Fast (aka – FTTC2) broadband solution alongside another future enhancement – Fibre-to-the-Distribution-Point (FTTdp) – at its Adastral Park R&D facility near Ipswich in Suffolk (England).

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has today published a short health check of the United Kingdom’s drive towards making superfast broadband (25-30Mbps+) speeds available across the country, which warns that the future demand for 1000Mbps (Gigabit) broadband connections will widen the digital speed divide between urban and rural areas. So is it time for FTTH?

22nd July, 2013 (21 Comments)

Over the next few years it’s likely that you’ll soon start to hear more about a next generation broadband ISP technology called Fibre to the Distribution Point (FTTdp), which Ofcom are currently encouraging BT to trial. But what is FTTdp and will it really help UK homes and businesses to get ultrafast internet connections? Let’s take a look.

The next generation of FTTC (VDSL2) technology, which is better known as G.Fast and could one day deliver peak internet speeds of up to 1000Mbps (Megabits), has passed its first stage of approval on the road to becoming an official ITU standard in early 2014.

9th July, 2013 (8 Comments)

Alcatel-Lucent has posted some tantalising details from its recent trial of future G.Fast and prototype Vectoring 2.0 technology at Telekom Austria, which could one day push today’s up to 80Mbps capable FTTC (VDSL2) broadband ISP lines to deliver speeds of up to 1100Mbps (1.1Gbps).
