Abingdon-based rural ISP Gigaclear has today announced that they’ve kicked off the construction phase of their £25.4m (state aid) Project Gigabit contracts for South Oxfordshire (Lot 13.01 – c.5,500 premises) and North Oxfordshire (Lot 13.02 – c.4,200 premises), which will extend their full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to around 9,500 premises in hard-to-reach areas.

Abingdon-based broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has already extended their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 580,000 premises (RFS) in rural parts of England (inc. over 130,000 customers), is reportedly hiring advisors to help it find new funding in order to continue their network deployments across the UK.

Strategic consultancy firm Eight Advisory has today launched a new Takeup Tracker, which examines the steady rise in take-up across the UK’s many alternative full fibre broadband (altnet) networks and compares it with that of incumbent operator Openreach (BT). The new tracker paints a mixed picture, albeit one with some positives to share.

Internet benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published their “definitive” 2024 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of various internet service providers across the UK and then separately across 12 of its regions (inc. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Overall, Virgin Media came top in the national scores, but the regional results are different.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that they’ve widened the scope of their recently launched investigation into rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which was probing their possible failure to “provide accurate and reliable caller location information to emergency organisations“ (i.e. making it more difficult for police, fire and ambulances to find callers).

The Connecting Cambridgeshire project, which is led by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, has today issued a progress update on their “Dig Once” policy and efforts to accelerate the roll-out of gigabit broadband across the county, with 21.6km of new fibre ducting already installed or soon to be deployed. Both Cityfibre and Gigaclear have now harnessed this.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear appears to have nearly completed their state aid supported contract under the Fastershire scheme, which originally instructed the operator to extend their gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) network to 70,000 of the hardest to reach premises in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire (this was revised upwards to 110,000 in 2020 – here).

Suffice to say that it’s a good day for Virgin Media and altnets.

Abingdon-based UK broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has long been rolling out their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover rural locations across Essex (England) – via a mix of commercial build and state aid supported contracts, is now facing legal action from Essex County Council (ECC) over an alleged failure to deliver on their contracted builds.

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and Neos Networks have revealed that their ongoing £7.25m “GigaHubs” project has now connected 180 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.) to a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network. But the work won’t complete until they reach the contracted 193 sites, later this year.
