EE (BT) claims to have become the “first UK mobile operator” to showcase a “pre-standard” 5G backhaul (network capacity) capability within their network, which is based off their 4G “Air Mast” technology and harnesses the 26GHz radio spectrum band for faster speeds and lower latency.

Forget about future 5G for today. Mobile operator EE has begun the process of deploying their latest 4G+ (LTE-Advanced) network upgrade to several cities across the United Kingdom, which have already demonstrated live download speeds of up to 429Mbps (66.4Mbps upload).

Consumer magazine Which? has published the outcome from their first 2017 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Giffgaff top with a customer score of 81%. Sadly Vodafone and EE could both be found languishing at the bottom of the table on 50% (tied).

Ericsson has teamed up with mobile network operator Verizon (USA) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Indy 500) to demo how their future 5G Mobile technology can deliver downlink data speeds of up to 6.4Gbps (Gigabits per second) and “extremely low latency“, all in a car travelling at 60MPH.

Switching mobile operators in the UK will shortly become as easy as sending a text message. Ofcom has proposed changes to the mobile switching process that will introduce a new “text-to-switch” system, which is expect to cost the industry £44 million to implement over 10 years.

A new survey of 1,465 UK businesses by the British Chambers of Commerce has found that 70% of firms have suffered Mobile “not spots” (no signal) or “partial not-spots” (basic cover via only some networks), while 91% of those who suffered such issues are rural based (falls to 56% for urban firms).

Mobile operator O2 has today become the latest to confirm that existing subscribers will, effective from 15th June 2017, be able to use their 2G, 3G or 4G Pay Monthly, Pay As You Go and Business tariff’s inclusive calls, texts and data bundles while travelling around Europe “at no extra cost.”

The telecoms regulator has today said that only a “small number of households [up to 36,000] may be affected by interference” when they shift UK Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) services out of the 700MHz spectrum band (TV will go to 600MHz) and replace it with Mobile Broadband (4G, 5G).
