The European Commission has today clarified the safeguards (“fair use policy“) that will exist alongside their plan to end EU mobile roaming charges from 15th June 2017 (i.e. any call, text or data allowance used will come from your domestic plan).

Telecoms operator BT (EE) and long-time partner Huawei have today joined forces on a new project to both research and develop the next generation of ultrafast (20Gbps capable) 5G based Mobile Broadband technology at the BT Labs facility in Ipswich.

Telecoms operator AT&T, which recently demoed a future 5G mobile network that could deliver Mobile Broadband speeds of nearly 14Gbps (Gigabits per second), has become one of the first in the world to move their 5G tech into the customer trial phase with a special 1Gbps product for business users.

Mobile operator EE has introduced the ‘Travel Data Pass‘ to replace their old ‘Euro Data Pass‘ for Pay Monthly customers, which makes it cheaper to use Mobile Broadband while roaming around an additional 11 countries (including several outside of the EU, such as Australia, UAE, USA, Canada and Thailand).

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today officially soft launched their new 4G based Sky Mobile service in the United Kingdom, which is powered by a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with O2 (Telefonica UK). The move will turn Sky into a true quad-play provider.

Mobile operator Three UK is being investigated by Ofcom after the operator voluntarily notified the UK telecoms regulator about a “temporary reduction in the availability of its network“, which may have hindered the ability of some customers to contact the Emergency Services (police, fire, ambulance etc.).

Bad news for BT today. Ofcom confirms that it has been unable to reach a voluntary agreement over the future of Openreach and would now force the operator to adopt “legal separation“. A new UK framework for the next decade of telecoms and broadband regulation will now be established.

Mobile operator Three UK has taken a leaf out of TalkTalk’s “Fix Britain’s Internet” book and launched a new campaign (‘Make the Air Fair‘), which adopts the image of Ofcom’s CEO, Sharon White, and calls on her to impose a spectrum ownership cap of 30% that would hit EE (BT) and Vodafone.

The Chancellor of the United Kingdom, Philip Hammond, has today given his first Autumn Statement 2016 and revealed a bit of extra detail about the plan to encourage investment worth £1bn+ towards the roll-out of ultrafast pure fibre optic broadband (FTTP/H) and 5G Mobile. Business rates will also be cut.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has today called on the market to get “Clear on Coverage” by making geographic coverage the default industry standard measurement, as opposed to the traditional and more optimistic use of population cover. Mind you EE does have a big advantage here.

After a long delay Ofcom has unveiled the rules for their forthcoming auction of radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz (2350-2390MHz) and 3.4GHz (3410-3600MHz) bands, which will help mobile operators to launch Mobile Broadband (4G) services with “very fast download speeds“. But it’s bad news for BT / EE as a cap will apply.

The company behind the popular Speedtest.net service, Ookla, has published its annual ‘Speedtest® Market Report‘ for the United Kingdom and revealed that we rank just 30th in the world for average fixed line broadband speeds (Virgin Media is the fastest ISP) and 32nd for Mobile Broadband (EE is top).

Two press adverts and a poster for JT‘s 4G based Mobile network on the Channel Island of Guernsey have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority after they “misleadingly” claimed that the provider offered the “fastest network“. Rival operators Airtel (Vodafone) and Sure disagreed.

The GSMA, which represents 800 Mobile Network Operators (MNO) from around the world, has identified a number of spectrum bands for future ultrafast 5G (5th Generation) based Mobile Broadband networks to use and called on governments and regulators to “collaborate on a harmonised approach.”

A new study of Mobile Network Operator performance in the United Kingdom by P3 communications has named EE and Vodafone as joint winners after both tied the top spot in their examination of data (Mobile Broadband) and voice related network quality; both received 803 points out of a possible 1,000.
