After a slightly longer than expected wait Virgin Media will today take the wraps off a new 4G (LTE) powered Virgin Mobile service, which is fuelled by their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with EE.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today unveiled a new range of 4G (4GEE) SIM-Only, 4GEE WiFi and 4GEE Tablet price plans, which are apparently “designed to offer customers increased choice and flexibility” in how they access the network. But some of the changes also reflect a small price increase.

Cable Internet and TV provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest quarterly results (calendar Q3 2016), which saw growth in their broadband base improve to total 4,867,900 customers (up by +59.9K vs +42.7K added in Q2). On top of that around 2 million premises will now benefit from ultrafast FTTP broadband.

The Scottish Land & Estates (SLE) group, which claims to be a “unified voice” for all those who own land and rural businesses in Scotland, has criticised the UK Government’s proposals for making it easier and cheaper to build new fixed line broadband and mobile infrastructure on their property.

We don’t yet have a solid standard for the future 5G based Mobile Broadband tech and nor do we know precisely what radio spectrum it will use, but that hasn’t stopped Qualcomm Technologies from launching one of the first ever 5G modems (Snapdragon X50). Speeds of up to 5Gbps are promised.

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today confirmed that the 700MHz (694-790MHz) radio spectrum band, which is currently used for Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services, will be re-purposed for Mobile Broadband (4G / 5G) operators to use by Q2 2020; 18 months earlier than originally planned.

The telecoms regulator has today opened a new consultation to examine whether the existing radio spectrum bands between 3.6GHz and 3.8GHz could be opened up for future ultra-fast 5G based Mobile Broadband or similar services in the United Kingdom.

A new study from Which? and OpenSignal has used crowd-sourced data gathered from more than 28,841 Smartphone users (503 million tests) to reveal how 4G based Mobile Broadband availability and speeds vary across the United Kingdom, as well as between different network operators.

Mobile operator Three UK has today roped in Cityfibre, TalkTalk, Relish Wireless and the Federation of Communication Services (FCS) in order to press Ofcom for a 30% cap on the total amount of mobile spectrum that any one company can own, which is largely targeted at EE (BT) and Vodafone.

Ofcom has approved a request by TalkTalk to vary its licence for 3.3MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800MHz “DECT guard band” (1781.7-1785MHz paired with the 1876.7-1880MHz block), which supports the ISP’s plan to add small cell / femtocell based 4G (LTE) Mobile into its broadband routers. The regulator also hopes to open the band up more generally to other uses.

Akamai has published its Q2-2016 State of the Internet report, which reveals that the United Kingdom’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 15Mbps (up from 14.9Mbps in Q1) vs a global score of 6.1Mbps (down from 6.3Mbps). Sadly the UK’s world rank has once again fallen from 19th to 20th.

The telecoms regulator has today launched its first “crowdsourced research project“, which asks owners of Android Smartphones’ to download its new Ofcom Mobile Research app, which will help them to build up a more accurate picture of Mobile and WiFi network performance across the United Kingdom.

EE has announced that they’ve switched-on their 4G Mobile network for premises on the remote Inner Hebrides Isle of Coll, which is home to just a couple of hundred people. Mind you they weren’t the first to do this (Vodafone has had a community supported 4G service on the island since 2015).

The European Commission has today proposed a revised Fair Use Policy (FUP) for their plan to end EU mobile roaming charges from 15th June 2017 (i.e. any call, text or data allowances will come from your domestic plan), which replaces the one that was withdrawn almost as soon as it was announced.

Tucked deep within the new Digital Economy Bill 2016-17 is a measure that will give Ofcom enough power to impose a financial penalty (worth up to 10% of a company’s gross revenue) on Mobile Network Operators’ (MNO) or Fixed Wireless ISPs that fail to deliver on a coverage obligation.
