It’s long been known that the data collected by Mobile Network Operators and WiFi providers can be used to track your location, but two new reports have revealed that operators could track more than this and also sell the data on for commercial benefit. Most consumers aren’t aware of this.

A cautious welcome has greeted UKB Networks submission for planning permission to build six or seven new 15 metre masts in the urban part of North Swindon after an earlier proposal was rejected (here). But the new locations could mean that fewer premises will receive the broadband service.

A new study has examined the 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband performance of mobile operators O2, EE, Three UK and Vodafone across five major cities including Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London and Norwich. Overall EE delivered the fastest Internet download and upload speeds in all cities, except Norwich.

The on-going effort to re-purpose the 700MHz radio spectrum band (currently used by UK Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services) and make it available for use by Mobile Broadband (4G, 5G etc.) in time for 2020 (Q2) could force 100,000 – 160,000 UK households to replace their aerials.

The national telecoms regulator has today launched a new tool that aims to give consumers a better idea about the performance and coverage of local mobile (2G, 3G and 4G) and fixed line broadband services. But it only uses data from the “major communications providers” and is very basic.

Future 5G based Mobile Broadband networks are expected to be extremely fast (peak speeds of up to 10Gbps), but new EU supported research taking place at the University of West of Scotland (UWS) could also make them “self-healing” to boost performance, protect against DDoS attacks and recover faster from outages.

One of the historic problems with improving mobile network (2G, 3G and 4G etc.) coverage has been the fact that local laws often limit their height in order to placate NIMBYs. But this is slowly changing and the Welsh Government are looking to follow suit.

The Government has today re-announced published their ‘New National Infrastructure Delivery Plan‘, which highlights a commitment to invest over £100bn into UK infrastructure by 2020-21 (transport, housing, digital comms, energy etc.). But there’s not much new for broadband Internet connectivity.

The latest Akamai State of the Internet Q4 2015 report has revealed that the UK’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 13.9Mbps (up from 13Mbps in Q3 2015), which compares with a global average of 5.6Mbps (up from 5.1Mbps in Q3). But despite this improvement the UK’s country ranking has dropped from 14th to 17th.

Mobile provider The People’s Operator (TPO Mobile), which piggybacks off EE’s Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform, has launched its first UK 4G SIM-Only tariff that for just £6.99 a month will give subscribers 2GB of data, 600 minutes and unlimited texts (30 day contract).

Mobile operator Three UK, which claims to carry 42% of the United Kingdom’s mobile data traffic, reports that their existing 3G and ever expanding 4G network coverage has pushed the average data usage per customer from 500MB (MegaBytes) in 2010 to 3.3GB (GigaBytes) in 2014 and it’s now 5GB.

The regulator has published an “econometric analysis” of the effect of disruptive firms (e.g. Three UK) on mobile pricing, which among other things suggests that the proposed £10.25bn merger between Three UK and O2 could result in consumer prices going up by between 17.2% and 20.5% on average.
