Telecoms operator EE has released its latest Q4-2013 financial results and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base added +12k new customers in the quarter to total 726,000 (up from +10k added in Q3), while their 4G based Mobile Broadband users went from 1.2m in Q3 to 1.996m now.

The communications regulator has assessed the impact for both licensed and licence-exempt uses of the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands and found that the risk of interference with other services, such as WiFi (adjacent 2.4GHz band), did exist but wasn’t big enough to be worth worrying about.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has extended the reach of its “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network to 14 more towns (total 174 towns and cities) and 18 of the UK’s largest airports, which means their service now covers 70% of the population. Commuters on key rail and road routes will also benefit.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today claimed that its new “ultrafast” (ugh the terminology..) 4G based Mobile Broadband network has managed to attract 500,000 customers within the first six months of going live and their network coverage is now reaching 36% of the United Kingdom (population).

A new survey conducted by Anglian Farmers, which is the largest agricultural purchasing group in the UK with a buying power in excess of £250m, claims to demonstrate the need for better rural mobile network coverage. Sadly it also comes up a bit short on both detail and comparisons.

People concerned that wireless radiation from mobile services operating in the electromagnetic spectrum (radio), such as those used for Mobile Phones and Mobile Broadband (e.g. 900MHz and 1800MHz), can rest a little easier today after an 11-year long and £13.6m UK study found “no evidence” of biological or adverse health effects.

It’s already possible to make 2G based voice calls on-board flights (note: not all allow it though) and Ofcom has now launched a new consultation that aims to extend this by enabling the use of 3G (UMTS at 2100MHz) and 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Smartphones and related devices on a licence-exempt basis while flying.

Global broadband ISP speed testing outfit Ookla have revamped their Net Index (Speedtest.net) service to include a useful summary of download and upload speeds for Mobile Broadband operators in the United Kingdom (as well as other countries). Interestingly the fastest operator is T-Mobile.

The Government has today called for feedback on their plans to develop a future digital communications infrastructure strategy, which aims to design a long-term plan for building even faster broadband networks, supporting the roll-out of IPv6 Internet addresses and developing 5G based Mobile Broadband technology etc.

Vodafone UK has reported that its new 4G Mobile Broadband services are now available in 13 cities across the country, attracting 370k subscribers (Q4 2013), and a bigger move into Pay TV is being rumoured. But sadly their fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base has suffered another sharp fall to just 59k users (down from 85k in Q2 2013).

Mobile operator Three UK has signed a major multi-million pound 5-year fibre optic capacity deal with Virgin Media Business, which should improve their 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband speeds by boosting the platforms backhaul network with an extra 300Gbps (Gigabits per second).

Mobile operators EE (T-Mobile and Orange UK) and Three UK have agreed to expand their 50/50 network sharing deal, through the umbrella organisation called Mobile-Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), with an extra investment of £1 billion to improve 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage and cut costs.

It took a few months but mobile operator Vodafone has finally passed Ofcom’s coverage obligation for 3G based Mobile Broadband coverage, which requires all of the markets major MNOs to provide related network coverage in the 2100MHz band to at least 90% of the UK population.

The mobile division of Supermarket giant Tesco, which is naturally called Tesco Mobile and bases its service off an MVNO deal with O2, has followed Three UK’s lead by offering access to its latest 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network at no extra cost for both new and existing customers.

Analysts working at Arieso have warned of an “explosive growth in mobile data usage“, fuelled by the latest generation of LTE based Mobile Broadband services, where just 0.1% of 4G customers were found to be “data hogs” that consume more than 50% of all downlink data (globally). iPhone5s owners were also named as the hungriest for data.

It’s surprising this hasn’t happened sooner. The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has, following a complaint by EE, banned several adverts for Three UK after they “misleadingly” claimed to offer an “Ultrafast” connection using their “3.9G” (DC-HSDPA) Mobile Broadband network.

Mobile operators Vodafone and EE have signed a new 10-year deal with Eurotunnel that will make their 2G and 3G based voice and Mobile Broadband services available to commuters travelling 100 metres below sea level on trains along the Channel Tunnel (North Tunnel) route that connects the UK to France (4G will follow later).
